Sadly, yes. I had the same thing happen last year. At first they called it a blighted ovum. This means that you were pregant, however, the body miscarried the baby, and in still "thinking" that it is pregnant. Your hormones will be very low. Your doctor may have another ultrasound in a couple weeks and run blood tests to determine your homone levels during this time.
In my case the baby was still there. My hormone levels started to go up after a while. The baby just developed VERY slowly. That was a key sign that something was very wrong. She had a very bad genetic disorder, and was lost a month later. It was trisomy 22 (NOT trisomy 21). Most babies who have this do not survive to be born.
Then there is the chance of having a pregnancy that is out of place in your body (in the tubes or such). The hormone levels will rise, yet the baby will not be seen, they will start to look elsewhere. This is not a good situation, and it is best taken care of as early as possible to prevent damage to your reproductive system.
Now, it can be too early too, and the pregnancy can be normal.
Good luck! My thoughts are with you.

It sounds to me like you are very early. If you took a pregnancy test that detects hcg 5 days before your period, they can sometimes detest hcg levels that are 25 , sometimes less than that. Your hcg levels should double every 48 hours. It can take a while for your levels to go up high enough to see anything . You can normally see a really small sac when your levels reach 1,500-1,600 and you have a transvaginal ultrasound. You can't see anything on an abdominal ultrasound until the levels reach over 6,000 and if you have a tilted uterus it could be even longer before you can see anything. If you just did a test then you are probably due for your period right about now, and that would make you about 4 weeks pregnant ( since you would count the first day of your last period as day 1 ) The gestational age of the baby would be approximately 2 weeks. Did the dr say if your endometrial lining was thickened , because this is usually the very early sign they see when you are too early in the pregnancy to see anything else. Alot changes in just a weeks time so say for instance your hcg levels were 250 the day you went for your last ultrasound then 7 days from that day your hcg would be over 2,000 which would mean they might actually see something. I would not worry, I am sure everything is fine and you can see your babys heart beating in a couple more weeks !!!!!

they could not detect my baby in the early stages of my pregnancy, and had to put in the ultrasound equipment down below, they then saw the baby, maybe the equipment is not working properly, dont worry theres nothing that you can do now but be patient. sometimes the body can have a high amount of the pregnancy hormone which is detected by the pregnancy test, although you may not be pregnant, it may come up as possitive. give it untill your next appointment, relax and dont worry, it could be a number of things. take care xxx

I had that...it was a blighted ovum...sperm and egg met so I was pregnant...but it didn't grow into a embryo. When I went for a ultrasound at 9 weeks I had an internal ultrasound done. They could see the sac but no baby. I had 2 choices...wait for the miscarriage or have a d&c. I opted for the d&c and to get it over with

First off, let me say I wish you the best of luck, and a happy healthy baby. Maybe its too early to detect the baby, or it could be an etopic pregnancy..other problems can lead to an elevated HCG level. I hope all goes well for you :<)

WOW this happened to me when i was pregnant with my 4 th child . i freaked , panicked , went into hysterics , they then sent me to the radiology lab to have another one done . i was crying my eyes out when the tech asked me if i was going to look at my baby on the screen .
hopefully this happens to you !
other possibilities are a tubal pregnancy , or you are not very far along , and i think a molar pregnancy can cause this too .
scary , but dont worry yourself sick [ easier said then done ]
good luck

yep! a friend of my husband's baby was like a little houdini. his wife was definitely pregnant, but sometimes they could find him and sometimes they couldn't....i don't know how it was possible, b/c there aren't THAT many places to hide in there, but eventually they would find him.
plus, you're still early, so hang in there...they'll find that baby!
