No. I love opera, and if I had a voice like that, I would use it too. Do you think Steve Vai is showing off when he plays his guitar just because he is incredible? If I had a talent like that, I would want people to see it.

After despising opera for many decades, I now believe that opera does so many unique things that it is worthy of special attention. If you stop to think about it--opera must have survived these 400 years as an art form for a reason! First, it is the only live stage performance that alters the pace of time; it can streach out a moment to minutes on stage, or it can condense years to minutes. It is also the only stage performance that allows you as the audience to both hear what is said by some characters and know what is thought by others--such that you as the audience have a better insight into what is really going on than any character on stage. Opera allows you access to emotions for a moment or a minute that you can't just flit in & out of in real life. Nothing else is like it, certainly not film. For the interested beginner (or advanced listener too!) there is a more than fabulous recorded educational series by the "Teaching Company" called "how to listen to and understand opera"; it is avail new on their website or periodically avail used on eBay.

If I only had a choice between those two, I would have to pick showing off. It is a highly emotionally charged art form. It isn't for everyone, I agree. It's for the open-minded. Tommy was a rock opera. Jesus Christ Superstar was too. Italian Opera isn't really my thing but I can appreciate the beauty.
Evita, Chess, & Phantom have changed me. My life is better because of them. It is my hope for you that you will open yourself up to opera one day. You should never limit the genres of music you will listen to. Every genre has some great music in it. Every genre also has some bad. Open up your mind.

Consider really listening. If you are brave, try singing along. When I listen to Pavoratti, I am amazed at the tone and depth of his voice. He never falters, never has a flat note. He is Italian and sings both in Italian and English. That's not showing off. Go to Limewire and listen to him, really loud..on a good system. Wow. Goosebumps!
If you can find one, rent an opera. A play or a movie. That will impress you!

That's like saying concert are the artists way of "showing" off or that movies are actors ways of "showing' off the people that perform in Opera are highly talented and are just giving people a chance to see that

NO.
Opera is wonderful and it is sad that more peple are not into it.
It isn't showing off either, I say if you can sing it, flaunt it. Not hide your voice behind some stupid pop song.

Sassy Says...I think Oprah has some valid points and ideas, but I do believe that she is becoming very into herself and how perfect she is and how she has it all together...blah blah... but I do see what you are talking about.
