I have had 00 steel tunnels in my ears for about 2 years and want to go a little bit bigger, but don't know what is a good next step. Also, how big (approximately) can you go without having to risk damaging your ears permanently, with my 00 my holes contract to fairly small immediately after I remove the plugs, I don't want gauges forever! Thanks for your help!

Generally, after you hit 00 gauge, it starts being measured by inch, i.e. 3/4", 7/8".
As to the other question, from what I understand, with 00 gauge, your holes will never fully shrink down to the 18 ga that "standard" ear pierces are.

i think the next larger size is 000
as for "how big can you go" i saw a guy in my town who had plugs in his ears that were at least 1 inch i diameter
