You should never have to pay an agent to represent you. Agents get a cut of your check once you get a gig.
It's nearly impossible to get an agent without professional experience, a headshot, and if you're not in any unions.
If you're like 15 or so, I recommend you stay in school. Get as much performing experience as possible then try auditioning for small roles etc. www.actorsexpress.com

Amazing - so many answers, so little real experience. First, having an agent won't be like you expect it to be. It will make some difference, but probably not that much. Typically, the bigger agencies get first shot at the roles and the bigger agencies are typically stocked with established talent, not beginners. Money is irrelevant in getting an agent. No one legitimate will accept it. How you actually get an agent will be unique to you; mass mailing, industry workshops, your second cousin, a referral. And keep in mind, that the more people who use the same method, the less effective it will be. Focus on the work, it's the only thing you can really controll and then just be aware enough of opportunity when it shows up. Some one once told me that a once in a lifetime opportunity shows up about once a month, if you're paying attention. He may have been a little pessimistic.

First of all some of these people who are answering you know nothing about acting. Second any agent who asks you for money up front is running a scam. If you already have some experience (doesn't have to be professional) go to an agent that is listed in the Screen Actor's Guild website. They are the only ones who are guaranteed to be real.

Sometimes it takes a lot of luck. My husband's cousin was discovered by an agent when he was in a class play (Man From La Mancha) in 11th grade. He did live in Northridge, California which helped. Since that time he has been extremely successful, acting in many movies, tv shows, directing, writing screenplays and producing. He has made a great living from it and has never had to do other jobs. But it just shows that you sometimes have to be in the right place at the right time and, of course, have talent.

first of all be seen... make indy movies, as many as you can... work for free if necessary, but make sure these movies will be in movie festivals. If not then at least make sure that they can be on your resume and that you get a dvd with you in the credits. Then put your name and headshot in casting websites for example starsearchcasting, or hollywoodnorth. List everything you've done in entertainment, no matter how small... if you have school theater experience, list it.
Then send head shots and resumes to reputable agencies... not all will call but some bite... important to have a dvd of your work
