As of January 1, 2007 you will need a passport to get back into the USA from Canada. You can apply for a passport at your local post office. You will need a passport photo of yourself- you can get these taken at any CVS or Walgreen's pharmacy, your birth certificate, drivers license and social security card- if the number isn't printed on your drivers license. You will answer some pretty simple questions and the post master will give you an oath that you must agree to. You then will have to pay about $70.00. A couple of months ago the wait for the passport to be returned to you was about 6 weeks. You can expedite the passport back to you for about double the cost if you are in a pinch. If you are cutting it close, don't expedite it until 2 weeks before you are going to need it. You can order it the normal way then if it's getting close for you to be going, there is information on the paper work they give you so that you can expedite it then. It will take it about a week to get to you then.

Make sure to call the post office before you go. For some of them they only have one person that does the passport work, so you will need to go in during their hours. Also ask what forms of payment they will take for issuing the passport.

All in all it is really not a big deal to do, and the convenience of having one just in case is totally worth it!

At the moment I don't believe you need a passport. As far as getting one you just need to go to the post office and get an application and fill it out and they can tell you the rest. I got mine several years ago before 9/11 and it took a few weeks. I'm not sure how long it takes now. I'm not sure about the cost. Mine was free because it was through the military. But I believe my brothers was around 50 but I could be way off.

At this time you do not need a passport to travel to Canada or return so don't worry about what you cannot control. If in the future you will need a passport then I am sure you will be able to find out the costs and what is necessary to get one, but since you don't need one now there is no cost and no appliation, and it takes you zero time to get.

You don't need a passport to get into Canada. I grew-up in Oregon and I went to Canada all the time, and we never needed passports. You need a birth certificate, ID or something like that. You can do a search on the computer to find out for sure, but unless they have changed the laws, you shouldn't need one.

Call your local Post Office, they can give you details on the costs, how long it takes etc... And the sooner the better because standard fees usually take 2-3 months, they have expedited service but that could cost you a couple hundred extra depending on how fast you need it.
