My husband and I are considering a move to Austin. We are 30 yrs. o.d, no kids yet. We'd like a suburb not too far from downtown (don't mind a 15-20 min. drive). and we'd like to be around the hills and Lake Travis. Any suggestions?

You can't really live in a suburb and have a 15-20 minute drive into downtown-- not if you're planning on working a normal "9 to 5" schedule. Nevertheless, there are several great areas around to look at. One that a lot of people tend to overlook is Manor. It's very close, easy to get into town (US 290 is as decent a freeway as any other, especially now with the direct connector to I-35), and, from what I can remember, not too expensive. (I moved away almost two years ago, so things may be different now.)

Compared to most of the rest of the country, Austin is still a cheap city to buy a house. My house in Denver or Pheonix would list at twice what I paid. So, I recommend it as a place to get a lot more house for the money.

Like anything, much depends on what you are looking for and what you can afford. Firgure out what you can afford and come to Austin to take a look.

South Austin is really nice around Slaughter area and it's about 20 minutes from downtown and it's close to San Marcus. You should check out Circe C. They have really nice houses in that area.

i suggest living in San Marcos, TX. It is only about 30min south of austin on I-35 and it is a very beautiful city. Crime rates are low and traffic is also low. Trust me, i live in SM.

I have friends in San Marcos. I assume that qualifies as "suburb," and it's pretty nice. I believe they also have the largest outlet mall in Texas there too. heh
