I have raised an orphan foal, to wean her I just started decreasing the number of bottles per day she got. I also started making her bottles a little weaker. I made sure she was eating enough grain and hay also. Good luck with your baby!!

Is she ready to be weaned? If not then what you should do is keep her with a nursing goat. Or a mare that has lost her baby. As far as weaning her, put her nurse maid in a stall and her in the pasture, or the other way around. She will scream and whinny and throw a fit but she will be ok in about 3 days. If you dont have a place where you can seperate them, send one of them to a friends house or a barn for a few days. most trainers will be understanding about this and you can get a good deal for a week.

Its not recommended that you hand rear an orphan foal, if its not too late get her a foster mother. Your equine vet will have a list.
Orphan foals don't do well as adults, when they reach sexual maturity they develop behavioural problems. Studs don't hand raise orphan foals.
She needs to interact with other horses for most of the day.

Is this a recent orphan? Colostrum is CRUCIAL. If she's older...they *can* be weaned at 3-4 months. Make sure she's eating well...give her a "creep feed" - a high protein feed with calf manna in it. When she's eating well, eating grass/hay you can safely wean her off milk. Get her in a small safe group and let her learn to be a horse. Many orphans don't learn to interact with other *horses*...put her in with 2-3 gentle but disciplinarian types that will teach her manners without injuring her.

We have a three-week old filly foal. We lost her mother almost 2 weeks ago and we are just learning - if there's anything we can help with, but we're not experts.

Slowly take the bottle away like keep feeding it like you are then maybe only twice a day and after a week only once a day and then not as much and then just stop. Just be sure to make it very very gradual.

I would slowly give her water out of a bucket but continue feeding her the milk until she starts drinking the water regularly.
