I LOVE that Red Bull Energy Drink but I quit when I found out I was pregnant. And I heard the Mountain Dew is bad if you having a boy (makes em steril) so I quit drinking that when I have my son 2 years ago. Now that just seems stupid to me. Does any one know?

There is *no* single substance that you could take that would "make a boy sterile". Even the harshest chemicals have risks measured in "per thousand" or "per hundred thousand". And Mountain Dew is not among these chemicals. What you probably heard about was the yellow dye that used. It's certainly not *good* for fetuses, but it is highly unlikely that it would do such horrendous damage even in the worst case scenario (see sources section below).

Red Bull ingredients: carbonated water, sucrose, glucose, sodium citrate, taurine, glucuronolactone, caffeine, inositol, niacin, D-pantothenol, pyridoxine HCL, vitamin B12, artificial flavours, colors.

After water, the next 2 main ingredients are sugar. That is certainly not good for you. It won't hurt the baby, as long as you are eating well and this is additional. Then there is caffeine, a number of vitamins and other nutrients, and chemicals. The caffeine probably won't hurt the baby in small amounts. The chemicals may or may not be safe. And the nutrients are probably not well balanced, so drinking too much of it will probably cause you nutritional problems; occasionally, that's probably fine, too.

READ THE LABELS sorry should not shout at pregnant women.
Both Red Bull and Mountain Dew have massive amount of caffeine, more that a strong cup of coffee. Mountain Dew won't make a male fetus sterile, read the label, there's sugar, water, flavor and caffeine.
The best thing in Red Bull for you is tomato juice which is a great thing while you are expecting. Ask your Doctor/midwife to recommend a book on healthful diet in pregnancy.

The NHS website says not to drink more than 200mg of caffeine a day when pregnant, and a can of Red Bull contains 80mg so in theory it's ok. I think I'd probably still avoid it though as it contains a lot of sugar and artificial ingredients such as taurine and glucuronolactone. I have found a study (see website below) which has investigated the effects on pregnancy, which seems to be rather inconclusive. I think though, that if someone feels it is important enough to run a scientific study on energy drinks in pregnancy, then it's probably best to avoid them altogether!!

I wouldn't be drinking the energy drinks, they are very high in caffeine, people drink those to stay awake. I'm sure they would affect the baby. As for the mountain dew, I have never heard that it makes boys sterilee. I love mountain dew. As well, seeing as I have 2 kids with my husband, I can say he is NOT steril and he drinks mountain dew too. What test are you referring to that says that, I would be interested in reading it? Besides it is dangerous to have caffeine while pregnant, you should be drinking decaffeinated.

Mountain Dew will not make your son sterile. That's ridiculous.
As for Red Bull, if you went with the sugar free, it's probably not as bad. I'm not sure how much caffeine is in it, though.

It is the caffeine you should stay away from during pregnancy and during breast feeding and Red Bull and Mountain Dew both have a lot of caffeine in them. You can become addicted to caffeine just like any drug and go through withdrawals stopping it. If you continue through out your pregnancy consuming caffeine you are feeding that to your child also. Which means after they are born they have the potential to go through withdrawals just like you would.

It has also been speculated that caffeine can greatly increase your chances of a miscarriage.

My vote - give up the caffeine.

They say to limit your caffeine intake to one or two coffees per day. If you just drink one Red Bull or split it in two, I don't see why that's not the same thing.

But-they also say to avoid caffeine if at all possible. Since it's effects on the fetus haven't been conclusive, I just did what they told me. (I'm a HUGE coffee freak too..thought I was dying when I was preg.)

Red Bull and Mountain Dew both contain Caffine...

What you stated is a complete "old wives' tale" there's no truth to that...but caffine is bad for you and your baby.

Red Bull has a whole lot of sugar in it. I'd be really super careful drinking that while you're pregnant, could cause gestational diabetes....check with your doctor.
