Role Playing Games
Yeah they are pretty cool, you play these games for the stories. You gain experiance through battles and events which you then use to customize your characters. A perfect example of these types of games are the Final Fantasy series, espesically Final Fantasy 7 - 10.

R(ole) P(laying) G(ames) are a kind of game, where you can play a character and/or tell a story. The grand daddy of all RPGs is Dungeons and Dragons. It's a game for a group of friends who can invent personas and play together to create a world. As for computer/video games, Final Fantasy is a great series, Diablo 1 & 2 are pretty fun, Kingdom Hearts gets a lot of reccs on this site, and then there are the on line ones.

Runescape seems to be pretty popular, haven't tried it myself.
Guild Wars looks cool, and they just came out with an expansion.
World of Warcraft is a 6 million strong game, with lot's of play options, but you have to pay monthly, on top of buying game =(

They are a ton of fun, becuase you get to adventure in a different world, and be a part of a story. I started playing them with the first Diablo game, and was hooked.

Role Playing Game.

In an RPG, you take on the role of a character of your own creation and/or is defined by your actions throughout the game. It differs from an Action/Adventure game, where your character could grow stronger by items, instead of the choices given to you in an RPG, and from a Simulation, where your character doesn't exactly grow at all, or you are in control of multiple groups of people.

A good place to start playing RPGs is with Fable for PC or XBox, as it contains almost all aspects ever seen in an RPG (item collection, character growth and modification, decisions affect the outcome of the game). If you enjoy Star Wars, Knights of the Old Republic 1 is another good place to start. Both of these games are fairly uncomplicated, easy to learn, and have good storylines.

As your tastes expand, try out The Elder Scrolls series (most notably, Morrowind [and its addons, Tribunal and Bloodmoon] and Oblivion), or Knights of the Old Republic 2.

Then there's (M)MORPGs. (Massively) Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games. An MORPG is a game where individuals to small groups of people work together as a team (or party) to accomplish missions or clear zones to reach the end of the game. Phantasy Star Online and One Must Fall: Battlegrounds are good examples of this. MMORPGs are similiar, but are more open, and there is less need for a defined party, but rather, a player can act as an individual, in a party, or in larger groups. World of Warcraft, Anarchy Online, and Guild Wars are prime examples of an MMORPG.

RPG=Role Play game like Everquest 2, World of Warcraft, Second Life, City of Heroes, and Starwars Galaxies. also referred to as MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplay Game). The purpose is to take on the persona of a character in the game...or to create your own. They're fun games...but there are some real crackpots there.
