also, the braked were just checked a little over 2 months ago, for a broken pin. they were fine until I felt a thump in the pedal. then the shimmy began.

basically all these answers deal with your rotors, if the rotors are worn down, that probably means you need new pads too, so just take it get a standard brake job done, rotors turned or replaced, pads replaces, drums turned or replaced brake shoes replaced (if you have drum brakes in the back).
If it is still there, then it is the calipers, which is the part that puts pressure on the pad and presses up against the rotor. The rotor is the metal disk you see on the front wheel, looks shiny.

Could be any of the previous answers (pads, rotors, wheel bearings) your best bet is to take the car to a qualified brake mechanic & have a diagnostic done (they are usually very inexpensive or even free at some brake shops). Once you know the cause of the problem, then you can decide if you want to fix it yourself or have the shop fix it.

warped rotors uneven brake wear only 2 ways to fix 1 new rotors and pads or have the rotors turned at a shop but the cost of rotors have gone down so your better off buying new... also u have to do both wheels or u defeat the purpose..

Well the thing is it can be a number of things. More than likely I would think it is a warped brake rotor.

You either need your rotors turned or replaced. Sometimes you can have a broken belt (you wouldn't be able to see it) and that will cause a lot of front end vibration. See a auto dealership for maintenance.
