Stalking is defined as "the willful, malicious and repeated following and harassing of another person."

There are several different way it could play out, here are a few examples:

The central theme of the delusion is that another person is in love with the individual.

The delusion often concerns idealized romantic love and spiritual union rather than sexual attraction — “a perfect match.”

The object of affection is usually of a higher status and can be a complete stranger.

Efforts to contact the victim are common, but the stalker may keep the delusion a secret.

Males, seen most often in forensic samples, come into contact with the law during misguided pursuits to “rescue” the individual from some imagined danger. Females are seen most often in clinical samples.

The delusion that the victim loves them may also be held.

These individuals may be obsessed in their love, without having the belief that the target is in love with them.

A campaign is begun to make his/her existence known to the victim.

Defense mechanisms play a significant role in the form of denial, minimization, devaluation, and projection of blame onto the victim.

I know a couple of people who have been victimized by stalkers. There's a gray area between being a "big fan" and being a stalker, and sometimes they may overlap each other.

Let's say that I happen to be a big fan of David Hasselhoff (I'm not, really. Seems like an OK guy, though). Now, as a "big fan", I watch his movies, see his TV shows, buy his albums, etc. I might even write to him and request an 8X10 glossy with his autograph. And if he's at some local event, I might ask him to pose with me for a picture.

But if I were STALKING him, I'd probably OWN every episode of Baywatch, and Knight Rider. I'd watch him over & over, so that I could imitate his mannerisms, the way he walks, etc.

The autographed 8X10 wouldn't be quite enough for me. I'd write to him repeatedly, wondering why he hasn't gotten back to me yet. In other words, a stalker feels like he KNOWS the victim intimately, and that he (the stalker) and the victim share a friendship/relationship. Of course, if it's a celebrity, he/she doesn't know the stalker from any other fan.

It would seem to me that an avid fan is one who might buy your music, or see your movie more than once. A fan may also join a favorite celebrity's fan club(I did). A stalker on the other hand goes way beyond the call of duty. A stalker might try to find where you live, and if he does show up on your doorstep. He may also write you not one letter but a few. Sometimes they get your phone number, and insist that you speak with them. Most stalkers are insecure, and needy. They may also have had a mental disorder that makes them think you will return their advances. In a nut shell they can be dangerous.

eemmmm in my opinion a difference between a stalker and a fan is that a stalker is someone that wuld go to extreme lengths to either be near to the person or even be in veiw of the person and a fan is just somebody who likes to send letters and emails to the person without getting desperatly depressed if they dont answer straight away!

i hope i've answered ur question, have a nice day!!!

Stalkers frequently believe they have a relationship with the celebrity, whereas a fan knows for a fact that the celebrity is most probably completely unaware of their existence ... unless they run their unofficial fan site or something.

stalkers usually idolize the actor/actress to the point that they want to be them or think they are in love with them. someone who is just an avid fan just respects the actor/actress for their amazing acting ability.

Fan:watches movies of that person, owns dvd's, reads books on them (if there are any), maybe gets an autograph from them (if they happen to bump into them), has posters of the person

Stalker:finds out where that person hangs out and goes there, finds out where they live and goes there, has the idea that they could be great friends (or more) with person and tries to meet them, digs through their trash can and keeps stuff

i think if you try to bother them in their private lives you are a stalker. if someone is at a premier signing autograghs and you wait 5 hrs in the rain=fan. you follow someone around while they are running errands or contact them at home etc=stalker
