Many foreign players that are over 7 feet tall, like yao ming and dirk nowitzki don't have any trouble making free throws because foreign players have more practice at fundamentals. If you watch big men like shaq miss free throws, it's because they have terrible form as opposed to dirk or yao, not because of their height. And many players who are less than 7 feet tall, like ben wallace, just can't make a shot, period. You could be 90 years old and make a free throw, so why can't professionals do it.

some players just arent natural shooters and dont bother to work on their shooting skills since they bring other strenghts to the table...

Because it requires hand to eye coordination that many athletes don't possess. And the reason they give you lame excuses is because they are asked the same lame question over and over again. Do you think Shaq never practiced free throw? Coaches made him practice for years, he simply can't do it. His value to the team is in his power and ability to be in position to make the play. Dirk fits in the picture differently. That's why basketball is a team sport. It is ridiculous to expect all players on the team to have the same skills.

big players such as Shaq put too much power into their free throw shots, all they need to do is practice though. Shaq was making his free throw shots for a little while, but then it was like he gave up and was like " maybe I'll make it, maybe I won't". In the playoffs and the finals, the team playing against Miami would foul Shaq on purpose because they knew he wouldn't make his free throws, so that was an oppurtunity to get easy rebounds for themselves.

Because the NBA isn't about fundamentals anymore, you see the NBA has evolved into the next AND 1 Streetball. You see no one cares about the fundamentals no more, people like Lebron, Marbury, Francis and many other players just want to do what the crowd wants and this is not the era in where the crowd cares about the fundamentals. I mean i as a basketball player i work on fundamentals like shooting, dribbling and other moves to enhance my playing ability. Thats why the foreigners are way more skilled now days.

thats a good question, i kindof agree with the exeption of shaq, if you look at the size of his hands, even for a 7 footer his hands as huge probably bigest in the league. it would make it really hard if you think about it. Then again i might be wrong, it might just not be his thing, just like:
Nash can pass --- but cant play D
Wade can shoot --- but not the 3 ball
Kwame Brown can (insert suggestion here) --- but he cant take it
strong to the basket. lol sorry had to add that one.

go lakers!!!

I DISAGREE WITH SHOELACE shaq is and has been a fantastic passer, and catcher of the ball, hand-eye co-ordination is a strange answer to this qustion man.

Because american big men when they are young(In there teens) spend most of there time working on post moves and not shooting. They do this beccause at the time they think to themselves, I am a big man I dont need to know how to shoot. But once they get to the NBA the habbit of how they shot when they were younger is there and extremely hard to break.

During the press conference for Ben Wallce signing with the Bulls he was asked why his free throw % is so low, he simply said it is because he "misses more than he makes".

They are just so caught up with moving and shooting the ball that they absolutely don't have any rhythm while fixed onto a place. They just never practice freethrows because they think that it is too easy and not just so important.

I think that society places too much expectation on athletes to make a shot or a pass, etc.

Even professionals suck sometimes.
