Pay more for hair products, and less for makeup, too much makes it look fake.

MOST products--makeup and hair products--have excellent quality items right at the drugstore.
If you really want to find the best for the lowest prices, get the books from Paula Begoun--Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me, and Don't Go Shopping for Hair Care Products Without Me.
That said, I will spend money on blush, because I love my Nars. I also will spend more on hair care products, but that's just being self-indulgent. There are good drugstore brands, but usually the smell in the good ones is off-putting.
I've tried a zillion different brands for *everything*, and there really isn't a lot of difference between the expensive stuff and the better drugstore stuff.

Some of the biggest rip-offs:
Kerastase shampoo & conditioner: It's owned by L'Oreal and the formulation is nearly identical to the regular old drugstore L'Oreal Vive shampoo & conditioner.
bare escentuals foundation: It's full of sparkles, doesn't blend that well, and doesn't look bare. You're better off with L'Oreal's Bare Naturale or Everyday Minerals.
Any facial cleanser that says it has any ingredients that do anything other than wash makeup, dirt, and oil off your face. Those ingredients will go right down the drain before they can do any good.
Steals:
Wet n'Wild lip gloss & bronzer...these are pretty good, and that's coming from a makeup snob!
Cheap eyeliner/lipliner pencils: almost all pencils are made by the same company in Europe, no matter who sells them here. Don't pay more than you should, unless you can't get the color you want cheaply.

I have been using Mary Kay products for a few months now. They are a little more expensive than drugstore brands. But are well worth the extra money. The cosmetics and skin care are very long lasting. And a little bit goes a long way so you are not having to buy all the time. Plus there is a 100% satisfaction guarantee. You're not going to get that with drugstore brands!! You should check it out!!

I would say pay more for the products you use for your eyes(mascara, eyeshadow, eyeliner etc) because they are very sensitive and you can have so much problems with them from using cheap products. Also pay for products you use for your skin, same rule apply here, you don't want the problems you can get from using cheap products.
I wouldn't say pay more for hair products or other make up like lipstick cause i don't think that matters a lot.I mean you have to do something seriously wrong to mess with that and you can find very cheap and good products for that.
Also, never never ever buy "fake" perfume....you don;t wanna know what they put in there.

The things worth paying for are moisturisers as they're so important for your skin. It makes a huge difference when your skin is sensitive to certain chemicals as well. The things to get for a steal are lip glosses; elf at Target has them in really cute shades for only a dollar. elf also sells eye shadow, eyeliner, and face powder for the same price.

You will get what you pay for. If you get cheap makeup, or shampoo or cleansers, moisturisers - you will get the results of a cheap product.
I figure I can't replace my skin, and I want it to look the best - so my products are Sisley - and they run from $50.00 to $400.00 [for a line reducer that actually works] and my skin feels so-o-o good. No wrinkles - just a couple of lines. And I'm 70.

skin products (make up, or creams) and hair products is where you should spend your money.
trivial stuff like eye shadow or nail polish you should get from drugstroes. why? your nails or eyelids wont break out or become damaged from using cheaper brands. if you use harsh products on your skin and hair, your going to have some very serious problems.

use the least expensive products in each category that works well for you.
aussie shampoo is inexpensive and works well for me, for example...suave is also inexpensive....
but i agree with the respondent above...OPI nail polish is very good and they have some colours with fun names like "I'm Not Really A Waitress" and "Holy Pink Pagoda" and "Aphrodite's Pink Nightie" (just a few that i have seen)

Go ahead and pay extra for a good foundation...it doesn't matter what you put on top of it. If the foundation looks bad, your other makeup will too.
