If he were standing on my window ledge during company time... I think I'd be compelled to fire him!

(Hmm... would that MAKE him jump?)

The employer has an option to keep the person and deal with it or terminate them and not. As an employer if a person is suicidal and has attempted there are a couple of things I'd look at as an employer. A, productivity and B. threat assessment.
A suicidal/homocidal employee poses a risk for the employer. Liability in the event this person commits the act at the work place is something that most employers are not willing to risk.

I'd can them and tell them to get help and in a year if they were a good worker if there were a position available to fit their ability I'd consider rehire but only after they'd completes some counseling and perhaps an inpatient psych evaluation.

Check your employment agreement / company policy and procedures. If it says they can fire you for discussing salary, they can. Employers like this system because they don't have people coming up to them saying "X makes this, I want this much money too" Employees who have less information on what the general salary is can't negotiate as well and may settle for a lower salary. I never heard of these extreme measures though... is your company facing a discrimination lawsuit? Or is someone trying to set up a union?

As long as the person is employed 'at will' they can be fired for attempting suicide.

Whether successful or not, suicide is disruptive and harmful to the business and its employees and customers.

I would hope that an employer would get help for the person, though.

I know that if I was an employer and my employee tried to commit suicide, you bet I'd fire the turkey because if he or she wants to kill themselves they might want to kill someone else also. Suicidal employees are not only a danger to themselves but others also.......

Depends on what state. In Nebraska an employer can fire anyone for any reason at any time and they don't have to give a reason. Now if you feel you were discriminated against you can file suit.

It depends on which State you live in.
Federal law prohibits your employeer from firing you ONLY for reasons of race, color, sex & religion.
Some states (like Indiana) are "at will" states that mean you can be fired for Any reason or NO reason as long as it is not what is protected under federal law.

No, but it depends on the circumstances. If you work in a very emotional place then it would be for the best. If you deal with people a lot they would need to factor that in. Etc. etc.
