The best age to start talking about kids is as early as they can comprehend. You can start the negative association at ages as young as one or two just by taking a cigarette, crumbling it up, and saying "yucky" as soon as they understand what the word is for. When they get older, you can start teaching them the names of drugs and tell them that they're bad and hurt. Then when they get to older, more mature ages, they'll already know the words and you can add true comprehension on top of the associations you've already built upon them.

Starting at 10 is kind of a raw slate basis when you can begin so much earlier and get lifelong results. It's never too soon to start if they have basic language comprehension skills. So, my reccomended age would be 1 year 6 months to 2, and then continue for a lifetime.

Around age 3, start talking about no-nos. Bad things that will hurt you if you eat or drink them.

Around age 4, start talking about MODERATION in most things. Explain that too much of anything will kill you.

Around age 6, start talking about poisons, toxins in more detail. Explain the difference between those things that will hurt you in excess and those which will harm you even in small amounts.

Around age 7, get specific. "Drugs are for sick people" is a great line.

Depending on where you live, the 5th grade at least. 7th grade they are going to know everything and probably have already experienced peer pressure. The 4th grade may be too early but if someone would live in a bad neighborhood where drugs are seen everyday....then the earlier the better. Don't just tell them they are bad for you and you souldn't do them. That isn't enough. They need to see the consequences. Shown pics of people who have been on drugs for a long time and how that destroyed their lives. Telling them no isnt going to cut it.

I would suggest the sooner the better. Now, children in kindergarten know more than we did when we were in high school.
Here where I live the local police department have formed a program known as D.A.R.E. They go into the local schools and educate the kids about drugs starting in the first grade and in the fifth grade they graduate from the D.A.R.E. program.

I told my kids about 7 or 8. Many school age kids have parents that do drugs and the possibility of them introducing your kids to pot, huffing, whatever, is way more dangerous than sparing them the dispair of the dangers of drugs.

I think it really depends on how mature they are and how exposed they are to things.....like movies or TV shows that address drug issues. And also how open you are with them as well......I do believe for most kids..the pressure to try things starts as early as middle school, so at least before then. Its a touchy subject and hard to approach, but in these days...its necessary.

There is no age that it should start it should be taught though there whole life. If you are asking when should you ask them if they ae using? I started to ask my son as soon as he was old enough to hang out with his friends and not be in my presence the whole time. I think he was like 5 years old.
