Here bloody here - or should that be "hear hear!". Either way, I couldn't agree more. I think it's the height of ignorance to use text 'words' here whether it's on an answer OR a question, and furthermore it's not necessary. If the questioner runs out of space by using REAL words then he(/she) can always continue in the "additional" space. Keep your text usage for use in text messages where there IS a limit to the number of characters/space available but that doesn't apply here so don't inflict it on those of us who like to speak The Queen's English, thank you very much !

Only after reading a couple of answers could I understand your question. It must be because I'm not a native speaker, I'm Hungarian and it took me some time to understand such modern words as 'in text'.
It's especially annoying for me, because I've spent 30 years learning English (I've been teaching it for fifteen), and it was quite an effort for me to learn to spell. It still needs improving, but I sometimes feel that it wasn't worth - when I see some native speakers' spelling. Oh, dear!
But there is one thing that mustn't be forgotten. Language (any language) is constantly changing. It's only natural and healthy if it changes parallel with the way of life of its speakers. When the latter is changing rapidly, the change of Language is shockingly quick. But English has already gone through such dramatic change - right before and after printing was invented and introduced. People must have had similar feelings: the new generation wrote and said things different way from the other. At the peak of these dramatic changes - in which there were a lot of shortenings and sound shifts - came Shakespeare and showed it wasn't quite useless.
(In Hungary there was a dramatic change, too, but it was inspired and encouraged by very educated scolars who felt the need of changing, otherwise this language would have become extinct. The result was wonderful and Hungarian prose and poetry began to thrive.)
I don't want to say these new phenomena are good - I only want to say we cannot be sure that all of them are bad.
(Hope my English was OK)

When I was a teacher, it was amazing how many papers would get turned in with "LOL" written/typed on them... the younger generation has such a problem differentiating regular English from "Internet" English nowadays...
And for the people who say they don't care about spelling or can't spell well, still not a good excuse. My b/f is incredibly smart and also dyslexic... you bet he uses the spellchecker, because his job wouldn't take him seriously otherwise.
I'd like to see some of these people try to hold down a job... think about it, kiddies... do you think someone will hire you if you can't even spell/write things correctly on job applications?

I agree! The whole point of text-speak is to condense the message either for speed or cost (160 characters per message). Only having an 8 digit keyboard means it takes time to spell out words. But there is no excuse for leaving out the vowels with a full keyboard

Oh yes! I'm sure the younger element are using text so much these days, that their spelling skills have deteriorated. It's down to laziness in the end!

It's getting to be the norm somehow. I guess we'll have to get used to it as the younger generation (I mean 8 and 9 year olds) now will probably lose all sense of proper spellings. Scary!

I don't even use text messaging - ever. People who do use it just for the sake of using it are lazy, and soon colleges are going to find lots of young punks who can't text their way through ENG-101.

Yes!! Even more annoying is that even if they're not using "text", there's a little 'Check Spelling' box right over this one and people still refuse to use it.
Such laziness!

I can't even bear it on the phone, I just wish people would learn to use predictive texting.
Maybe I'm just getting old and intolerant.
