I want the xp computer to be able to print from my printer

yes
install the printer on the windows xp system.
goto printers properties and share the printer on your computer.
note down the ip address of your printer.
you can get your ip address by going to command prompt and type ipconfig.
enable file and printer sharing on your computer.
now goto the 2nd computer and in the run tab type
\\ipaddress
u will see the printer, double click on the printer and it will install on your 2nd computer.

my dad did this at our house because we have numerous computers & 1 printer. network the computers together & link the printer to the network.

sure you can. on the printer setting click on share with other's then you network and have your own group then you can selct your printer or printers
