Mexicans are from Mexico and Puerto Ricans are from Puerto Rico. They're both Hispanics. It's not that they don't like each other, but people can be sensitive about when you get mistaken for another race.

don't feel ignorant. Some people (white) call 'ALL' people of Latin/Hispanic origin "Mexican" You can tell the difference mainly in how they speak. Puerto-Ricans pronounce words differently, and many speak a little faster than Mexicans.

People are really sensitive to this kind of thing, they may all be Hispanics but from two different cultures with separate identities. It makes you sound as though you don't really care about your friends as individuals.
I'm English and I get really, really annoyed when people abroad think I'm American. But considering how embarrassing it is to be English nowadays, I think I'll go back to saying I'm Canadian if anyone asks. Someone in Mexico thought my boyfriend and I were Swedish, which I took as a compliment.

There is a difference between race and nationality. Nationality is the country your are from. One is from Mexico the other from Puerto Rico.

First where are you from??? You would hate it if people classified you in one race, lets say your white and I call you Canadian because you look the same you would get offended even though there's nothing wrong with Canadians. Also Mexicans and puertoricans are very different. They have totally different cultures. They listen to different music, they eat different things, they dress differently as well they have different dialects.

Latin American people take a lot of pride in their nationality, even if technically they are all hispanic.
