I keep it chlorinated with the tablets and that works till grass, etc. gets in the water. I then add household bleach and turn on the filter and it looks as though it clears up but the water remains a bit cloudy. Someone keeps turning the filter off and then it gets bad again. Is there a home remedythat I can use to treat the pool for algea and prevent it, instead of buying the shock products?
Thanks,
Mary M

In this heat chlorine is gassing out of the water at a record pace. Tablets alone won't keep up. They are too slow dissolving. So you have to get a quick hit of chlorine back into the water before the algae gets ahead. Maintain the pH at 7.2- 7.6. Keep the total alkalinity about 100 ppm. Shock, shock, shock. That's routine in this heat. As for the bleach? Well, to be honest it takes 14 gallons of bleach to add the same amount of chlorine as one pound of granular shock!
Also, threaten to amputate a few hands for anyone caught turning off the pump.

There isn't a home remedy that works better than commercially avaliable products. Bleach, really is an option of last resort as it's actually more expensive overall, per volume. Only go the bleach route if the pool store owner died and isn't expected to have his store open in the near future and he's the only game in town.
Secrets to an algae free pool?
1 /Filtration - keep that pump going as long as possible in a 24 hour period. 24/7 if possible.
2/ Water balance- keep your water balanced . It helps your chlorine work more effectively. Check more frequently, especially the chlorine levels. This weather is zapping the chlorine down.
3/ Sanitizing- keep your chlorine levels up above 1.5 until this weather passes. 3.0 is preferable and will still allow you to swim.
4/ Keep the pool itself as clean as possible. Any organics in the pool, grass cuttings, leaves, pool toys not cleaned off that were used at a lake and dirt on the bottom, all use up chlorine.
If you stick to the above, you should never have algae in the pool.
