Get a stitch ripper and rip a tiny section of the bottom stitches out just enough to get a pair of scissors in to cut the elastic, pull the elastic out, and then you can stitch that tiny section back up and you won't even damage the material.

If you make a small perpendicular slit near the seam, & fish the elastic out & cut the elastic, it may take a washing or two to get the memory out of the fabric, but it will come out.
If you find you want the elastic back in, cut a longer piece, attach a large safety pin on the end & push it thru the slit. When you work it all the way around, make the elastic long enough to be comfortable & sew it, or even tie it, & stick it back thru the hole.

Check to see if the elastic is stitched in. Meaning, is there a hollow area with elastic in there (then just cut a slit and pull it out) or is there stitching over the elastic itself? Keeping it in place? Most sweats have at least one area of the elastic sewn in place, so you may have to cut more than you planned

Yes, it works, I did it to my gym sweats because it was soooo... annoying!! Just slit it, and pull the elastic right out!!!

It works, cut it all the way through if you don't want any elastic feeling.

Obviously you will be cutting the elastic, thus eliminating the problem. They will look rather silly though, IMO.

I do it to every pair I get that have that gather at the bottom-as long you don't cut them too far up (just enough to snip the elasic) it doesn't mess them up.
