We live in a society where you get paid what you are worth, if you are worth 5.15 an hour that what you should get paid, if you dont like that then freaking educate yourself. For all of you that want minimum wage to go up, why dont we just pay everyone in the whole freaking country the same annual salary, janitors to CEO's, heck even people on wlefare, would that make you happy, then noone would get their feelings hurt that they cannot use their dang brains and do better for themselves.

Super Duper that isnt an entirley true statement, there are companies that pay over minimum wage, i know i work for one, in fact there are many people that make more than minimum wage. And many people get raises and promotions, so its only those who choose not to educate themselves that dont get paid more and that is their own fault.

true. but CEO's get paid a ratio 240:1 higher than that of their workers. that's where the money needs to come from. all they do is have power lunches and fly first class to buisness meetings. how hard is that really?

Oh you pompus a**!!!! Guess what? I came from a fairly well-off family - 3 story house - am intelligent and born in Washington DC. I've worked since I was 12 years old and am now 48 years old. I make more than $5.15 an hour by a little more than double and ya know what????? It's almost impossible to live off of that right now. You think about this. My father-in-law retired over 20 years ago making $8.00 an hour (manufacturing - was there many years) ---- his mortgage was $125.00 a month. I don't make a lot more than that NOW and rent is over $900.00 a month. Calculate that with the cost of insurance (I can't get that now so can't go to the doctor even) --- groceries weren't nearly as cheap as then either. I make a little more than the "average" pay in our area. The housing -- an "average" home costs approximately $300,000.00 NOW. BAD things happen to people too -- like for instance, my husband DID TRY TO RETURN TO SCHOOL (in his 40s under the Pell Grant) - got more than perfect grades and HALF WAY THRU, they cancelled his PELL grant. THE VERY VERY NEXT DAY PRESIDENT BUSH SAID ON TV "I DID NOT CUT PELL GRANTS" which was a total lie. I should be close to retirement now and can't even CONSIDER IT --- but ya know what? Our family has also had to deal with a drug addict who stole everything, breast cancer, a horrible back injury, major job loss.....things leading to foreclosure and total financial ruin. There were other bad things that occurred that hurt us too and we're still alive --- but stressed/unhappy most of the time. We can't get caught up. It is impossible - we've tried and we make more than that. You eveidently don't know your math. You figure out what $5.15 does. Do you think the person checking you out at the store with a smile on their face deserves to be homeless? You suck

People can understand, but they choose not to. Too many people are blinded by their emotions and expectations. They say $5.15 is not a livable wage. But that is only if you define a livable wage as a wage high enough to allow you to live by yourself, in whatever apartment you desire, have a car, tv, internet, brand name clothes, beer, cigaretts, and junk food.

The fact is you can live on $5.15 an hour. But you will have to live with other people (either family or roommates), you may have to use public transportation, you may have to give up tv, the internet, beer, cigaretts, and junk food.

The problem is our entitlement society. People think they are entitled to live where, when, and how they want. They whine because $5.15 will let them live, but not how they want to. You are NOT entitled to a comfortable life. It is a priviledge to live in a country where you have that opportunity.

People should be grateful they make $5.15 an hour. It is far better than most of the rest of the world. People need to stop being greedy, spoiled brats and be thankful they are not in a third world country.

Wow way to try to walk in other peoples shoes. First off everybody deserves to make a living wage when they work and 5.15 an hour is not it. Secondly not everyone can get an education either because of finances or because they are just not able to learn somethings. Do hard working people with low IQs deserve to be punished because of the way they were born. Now ask yourself who is more important in your life a CEO of Exxon or the janitors or garbage men who keep things working and clean.

How can we claim to live in a civilized society and at the same time flat out declare that one's low market worth justifies his or her starvation or homelessness?
What about people who become victims of economic downturns? The only factory in town closes and skilled people are out of work and look for any means of employment. That's a common story nowadays. Unfortunately, we cannot just "educate" ourselves. Employers don't look for knowledge, they look for degrees, and degrees cost money. To get money, one must work and get more that $5.15 an hour to pay for school and make the ends meet. That especially applies to people who have families. Finally, there are people who are simply not smart enough to get educated or whose circumstances prevent them from acquiring a marketable skill. Do they deserve to starve? Should we tell them to start stealing instead? Nobody proposes paying them a neurosurgeon's salary, but one of the reasons we live in a society is to be able to take care of those who are less fortunate than the most. We are country of huge resources and while I am not proposing a socialist state, we should be able to help people sustain a minimum standard of living. It makes sense. The money they earn stays in this economy. It goes back to the same grocery stores and gas stations who will continue pay these people 5.15 an hour until the government tells them otherwise. People say you can live on 5.15. I'd like to see them try.

It is not a question of if someone is worth "5.15" it is a question of Corperate exploitation. A corperation will allways try to pay the least amount of money for labour and if the govermant does not raise the minimum wage acording to inflation people will not afford to live the standards of living of America.

I agree, now minimum wage people get like a 35% raise when I get about a 3% raise. And I am the one with an education and skills. How's that fair?

then noone would study and want to be a CEO cause everyone will be paid equally whether educated or not.

I agree with you. It's all about education. The more you know, the more you should be paid.
