We all know the Hollywood establishment takes pains to remind us just how evil and unjust the blacklisting of the 1950's was. It seems like there is a "message movie" about that era every few years (The Majestic, Good Night, and Good Luck).

They lament about how actors, directors, and writers were boycotted simply for their unpopular beliefs.

So, will they now hold true to their feelings of artistic freedom and anti-censorship, or will they turn in to flaming hypocrites?

(Note: Nothing in this question is to be construed as support for the vile things Mel Gibson spewed this weekend.)

Wow, I am surprised by both the volume and the diversity of answers to my question. It will be hard to choose one as the best.

Hollywood will forgive, because when it all comes down to it, it is about the money.

You can call me all sorts of names but in the end if you make me millions, i will just laugh all the way to the bank and say what a silly person that Mel is

and does anybody know "EXACTLY" what he said, I haven't seen it or heard it anywhere. There fore, we really don't know how far it went. Although it does not excuse it, at least he has apologized, and more than once I might ad. Everybody is just human, whether they are a star or otherwise. Look at all the despicable things Bush has said and done... has anyone had the guts to impeach him!

What it boils down to is that everyone makes mistakes and should be forgiven at least once .... this does not include murderers or rapists, they know what they are doing and even plan their things. At least here Mel Gibson was drunk, and if he is an alcoholic as is said then he said things without being able to control himself.

Most of the blacklisting done back i the 50's was because people were thought to be communists ... a lot were not .. so shame on everybody for jumping to conclusions and ruining others lives!

I don't know why people cannot somehow stop the jewish domination of Hollywood. It's totally wrong.

See, as usual, people are not getting the entire story. The man made a movie about Christ and was withstood by the Jewish powers dominating Hollywood. The man lived under extreme stress because he made a movie about Christ. Why? Cause Jews hate Christianity. See, the bigotry started there, with Jewish hatred. Who are they to try and stop or pressure Mel for making a movie about Christ? They did just that. It was they who started the stress on his life. That stress was building up and hurting his career in a city dominated by Jews. When he got drunk, all of that stress just poured on out.

How does Hollywood become dominated by Jews? Who gets a movie? Who gets a promo? Who gets advanced? Why so many Jewish actors getting jobs? Are Jews promoting Jews, to the hurt of other non-Jews? Why am I anti-Semitic for pointing out bigotry?

Mel was not an anti-Semite. If he is now, surely, it's the Jews doing. How is a man supposed to respond to pressure like that? Except to hate them. (and still Mel doesn't hate them) And again, why do Jewish people have such a dominating stronghold over all the media and so many other areas of our lives?

One of the most famous Hollywood agents has already called for the boycott of any Gibson projects and ABC has pulled the plug on a miniseries he was planning about the Holocaust.

It strikes me how everyone is all up in arms over his statements that he made while he was intoxicated but there is not talk about boycotting and blacklisting Tom Cruise's sober antics and statements about his made-up science fiction religion. Heck Hollywood even allowed the church of Scientology to make Battlefield Earth.

I don't think he should be formally blacklisted by Hollywood if such a thing exists anymore. Many of his friends and associates, however, are people who he reviles for their religion so his "blacklisting" may be de facto - I hope so. I do think that the public should vote by not spending another dime on any of his "projects". One could only wonder at what his approach to the movie on the Holocaust would have been; I for one don't want to read about him or it it in the papers. He should go back to Australia or where-ever and quietly disappear. Bottom line is that he's a bigot.

Mel Gibson? No way. You couldn't shake him from the A list if you tried. He's already established and has all the connections.

Besides, making movies about religious beliefs is a lot safer than movies about political beliefs.

And as for the DUI? Please! In Hollywood, this is almost a rite of passage or badge of honor. The more shock and awe and "buzz" created the better. It's a sad world...

If they put up with a crack pot like Tom Cruise and his Scientology trips, then they have not right for blacklisting Gibson.

Granted what he did was not politically correct, and granted that the large majority of people who run Hollywood are Jewish, but I mean come on. The guy was hammered. I be that anyone would say some pretty rude or unpolitically correct things, I know I have.

I don't think he will be blacklisted, although his popularity will fall. I think he will have to wait about a year or so to regain it. Look at other celebrities that make mistakes - Pee Wee Herman, Yasmine Bleeth, Nick Nolte, Glen Campbell, etc. There are those that can avoid the permanent blacklisting like Jeffrey Jones the principal from Ferris Buehller with the porn on his computer he is now appearing on Deadwood, Wynona Rider and her shoplifting she is back at work after a long hiatus.

There is nothing Mel Gibson can do to atone for his anti-Semitic rants. He was blasted by Hollywood for being overtly religious and for his depiction of Jews in "The Passion of the Christ", and accused of being anti-Semitic because his father is a Holocaust denyer. Now, this latest incident confirms what people suspected all along, and that is that Mel Gibson is antisemitic. Do not pass Go, do not collect $200.

No. Mel Gibson was wrong and he admited it. He is still a very good guy. No one will let down an offer to work with him.

I bet every single person on here has gotten drunk and done something they regretted. Either doing something or saying something. So just because he's a movie star he's different than us and should be hanged for his drunk comments? Well should you people be hanged for yours?

Maybe you would like me following your every move and critcizing anything you do wrong. I bet you would have a lot worse stuff than Gibson.

mel is a vehemant anti-semite. lets face the facts, most of hollywood is jewish or is of jewish descent. do the math. although everyone knew mel was an anti-semite all along (his father is also a foaming lunatic who happens to be a huge holocaust denyer) mel has never publiclty denounced his fathers sick veiws, and hollywood saw it as mel trying not to disrespect his father. after "passion" we all knew for sure that mel was an antisemite too. not only has mel embarrassed himself and put shame to the studio he founded and owns (because no other studio in their right mind would ever hire him), but he has completly destroyed his new movie "apocoliypto" and it will proabbaly hurt his box office numbers seriously. some distributors might actually black list him, and that will kill his career.
