Ill copy and paste my answer from a question very similar to yours...
"World of Warcraft is fun until you max out your character's level. Then you get to do this thing called "raid". Basically, its where you go into a really big dungeon with 39 other people you probably dont know, and do what the leader of that "raid" tells you to do. Normally, he'll tell you to be targeting the same thing, and pressing the same 3 or 4 buttons for however long it takes to accomplish your objective, which is normally to down some huge boss monster. This normally takes several hours. Oh, and raids only occur ever so often, so you actually have to schedule your life around this game. Seems fun, right? The best part is: This is pretty much the entire game!
Player versus Player combat in World of Warcraft is a joke. Heres how the PvP "Food Chain" goes... Gear>Class>Skill
So, basically, if you outgear another person, you can take them down in one or two shots. Seems fun, eh? Not if youre on the other end of that deal. Most people never even PVP at all, just because its become as boring as raiding.
Oh! And I forgot "grinds". There are certain quests/raids that may require things that you can only get from a certain "faction". To get those things from those factions, you have to "grind". Grinding is basically where you sit in the same area for hours on end killing the same exact monster over and over for an item that it drops. You turn in this item to the particular faction you are grinding for, (the item may never even drop)and they give you "reputation". Reputation is how well-associated you are with that faction,(and the items you hand in to get reputation never really give you that much rep.) and certain items can only be bought from that faction if you reach a certain level of reputation. It really is quite exciting. *rolls eyes*
Up until you max out your character, World of Warcraft is a blast. I recommend you play until lvl 60, and then cancel."

WOW is a great game, but some info was left out in previous answers. The game is all age and gender friendly, and the game does not stop once you reach level 60. It really only begins there, however, there is more than enough for your character to do until they reach level 60. Level 60 isn't all about doing raids. Until you reach level 60, and beyond, you can complete quests, travel around, join guilds, and play in the battlefield against other players. You can create several different characters if you want, and just trying to determine which server to play on can enhance your game play. It can all be time consuming and the 15 bucks a month, plus the investment of the game itself is well worth it. You can make friends, play solo, join groups that share your quests, and again, join guilds if you want to. There is so much to do with the game, that is impossible to state it all here, and if you fear playing too much, just learn how to divide your time accordingly. You can also buy game cards in most stores where the game is sold, and the cards provide an alternative to paying the monthly fee as opposed to having to have a credit card on file. Check out their main site, worldofwarcraft.com, to futher see if it's a game you want to dive into. Using the cards will pretty much allow you to pay per 30 days as you play, while the credit card option will either charge every month or other options as you choose. The game is divided into the Horde (the evil) and the Alliance (the good) sides. I have characters on each side, and I have a mage, a priest, and a druid I play with. There is an email system in the game, banks, a guild system, and so much more. I assume I'm probably much older than you, but age isn't a factor when it comes to playing this game, other than you really have to have basic on line gaming knowledge of respect for other players. Hope this helps!

I've been playing WoW for about a year now. It's well worth it. I have 3 60's, all of whom I still like to play, and more alts coming up fast. Raids can be a lot of fun, or a huge pain. Depends on who you raid with. If you're smart, you'll do it with your guildies when you can, so it's people you know. Rep is a huge pain, though. There is an expansion coming out soon (this year, I hope), that will add a lot of content to the game. Have fun, and good luck.
If you choose to pay for 6 months at a time, it costs about 12 American dollars a months (only available on credit, I think).

Guild War has better graphics, no endless grind session, PvP(require to be better skilled than armored), GvG, alliance battle, elite missions, And oh yeah no monthly fee ever!!! Did I mention that they have a guild ladder(ranking of guilds in GvG) they hold a tournament for $250k to the top guild!!! every 6 months or so.

first off like many other MMORPGs World of Warcraft can be a very addictive game. but yes it is very good aswell, brilliant in lore, gameplay and many other things.
you have to purchase the software (unsure of the price on that) and also, it costs between 12-20$ monthly depending on your payment plan.
