If thousands of illegal immigrants can form a protest, why don't US citizens utilize their rights and freedoms instead of excepting what big company's want their bottom line to be?

Because, due to the monopolies and our reliance on these products, Americans have no options. One of the beautiful things about America is that it has a (relatively) free economy that the government doesn't interfere in (mostly). This allows anyone to start a business.

Unfortunately the side effect of this is that, when someone (or a couple someones) control all of a source of something (oil, phone lines, etc.) they can set the highest price the market will bear. The prices for these things was low for long enough that Americans came to rely on them (especially gasoline) that going without will seriously alter people's lives.

There are things people can do though, although it is small. Since there aren't complete monopolies you can boycott the companies that are exploiting the public more than others. Use your local version of http://www.gasbuddy.com/ to find the lowest gas in your area and shop there. Drive less, if you can. Shop around for the lowest price on cell phones, and get plans that only meet your needs without exceeding them by much. This will limit the amount that other companies can charge and eventually will lower total prices.

I would even be all for a national driving boycott day (as long as its not during the week when I have to go to work... ;) )

I don't have a cell phone. I carry a phone card, and rarely use it. Email and snail mail work great.
The gasoline is harder. I was already carpooling before the prices went up, but I live in a rural area, and prices are always higher than in the cities because you just don't have an option. When the president is in bed with the gas companies, and has already shown a propensity to shut down any opposing voices, people have to worry about making waves. But I hear the rumbles, and I think a revolution is on its way. Despots, take heed.

Because corporations control us in more ways than one.
They know we need these things, so they can do as they please. And mainstream America can;t be defined. There are too many factors such as climate, crime, safety and security, just too many factors that differ with every state you go to. The laws protect these companies and the companies protect politicians. It is all tightly worked so that whatever we as a people do it won't matter unless everyone gets their butts in gear. And to tell you the truth looking at America right now, mot of us seem too lazy to want to do anything about it, Its a shame.
Thousands of illegal immigrants protested because they had a lot in common. Americans in general are too different and widespread to have the same type of life as the next guy.

It's a little difficult to boycott gasoline when it is a necessity to daily life - if only the money that we are paying for gas would go into road construction or something useful instead of the pockets of the big whigs...

neither cell phone bills nor gas prices are a substantial part of anyone's expenses ...especially when compared to rent or car notes. Instead of boycotting or organizing, simply use less of it and your bill will go down. In real terms (not nominal prices), cell phone costs are not at a peak and gas prices have been higher (in real terms) in 1979.

Americans are too lazy.

They can't boycott gasoline, because they might have to give up the comfy SUV that gets them to work.

Besides, as long as there's TV, Americans will never organize squat.

Outrageous cell phone bills? I must have missed that one.

I agree and therefore I don't have a cell phone, shop at Wal-mart, Eat fast food, ride my bike to work, have only one TV, and have ended up reading fifty books a year up from five for the last one.

I love the idea but it won't happen.

It's not that we are lazy. We have been blessed with the ability to PAY our bills and instead of complaining, we are thankful to have been born into a land of opportunity and freedom.
