The hamster has been out of it's cage since 8:40 pm last night. We have looked under and in everything he may be in. We will put out boxes with food, so that we could trap the hamster. I'm so afraid that one of the dogs has eaten it. When should we call the owner? They are gone for 3 more days.

Depending on what kind of dogs you are watching it's possible they may have killed or eaten the hampster by now. If the dogs are terriers I wouldn't hold out much hope for finding the hampster alive as terriers are bred to track and hunt small fuzzy animals... However, it's still possible that the hampster is hiding under the fridge or stove as rodents are attracted to dark, quiet, warm spaces... Leave a tiny bit of food out in the middle of the room and keep the dogs locked up. If you notice any of the food goes missing (or find any droppings) then the hampster is still around... Call the owner immediately unless they're dealing with a serious situation and let them know what's happened and that you're doing your best to find the hampster. Best wishes to you...

It depends on the breed of the dogs. Most dogs will play with rodents until they die and sometimes certain breeds will eat small rodents. The hamster might be lost somewhere and may show up.

Either case, call the owners and just tell them that the hamster got out and you cannot find it. Ask if this has happened before and ask for suggestions on where to look.

Also be prepared to help pay for the hamster if that comes down to it. You need to concentrate on the dogs.

It's possible that the hamster is still hiding behind something. I would give it another day, try with the food to trap the hamster (I would stick with one, not multiples since that will make it harder for you to keep watch), *then* call the owners. You may still find the little guy, and there's no sense in worrying them in the meantime. If the dog did get ahold of the hamster there would likely be some... er... evidence. I doubt it would devour every little bit. Are these large dogs? If not, there would *definitely* be something left to find.

Yes, dogs will eat hamsters. Call the owners now. They might know a favorite spot where the hamster hides out when it escapes. Put the dogs outside if there is a fence, if not, confine them to an area where the hamster would have difficulty getting to.

Yes, it's possible that the dogs ate the hamster, but more likely, the hamster is just hiding somewhere. Whenever my hamster got loose, I would always find him behind either the fridge or stove...they like warm dark places. I wouldn't bother the owners while they are on vacation, wait until they come home before telling them their hamster is missing. With any luck, he'll show up before they come home. If not, you can offer to replace him. Hamsters get loose, they spent most of their waking time looking for an escape route. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Keep looking for the hamster - they're usually pretty smart about hiding (mine hid from the cat really well). Keep an eye out for its droppings and concentrate on looking in that area. I'd go on and call the owners now and let them know what's going on. People who own hamsters know that things can happen to them. And yes, the dogs may have eaten the hamster.

We have had dogs and hamsters - I've never known a dog to eat a hamster but it is possible I guess. More likely the hamster is in the walls or vents. Listen at the vents at night - we had one get right inside the wall and stayed there for about a week - we had to bust a hole in the drywall to rescue it. I recently found one in my closet and it had totally ruined a sweater making a nice little nest. As you know they sleep all day so you can't hear them but when it's quiet at night you may be able to locate it by sound. Good Luck

Don't worry too much about it. Hampsters are quite fast and if the dog had eaten it you would at least find some proof of it. Probably hiding somewhere in the walls or in some dark corner of the house. As for the owner, be honest, these things happen. It's not as if you lost one of their children the worst that could happen is you pay 10$ for a new hampster and they won't ask you to babysit their pets anymore.

No, dogs do not eat hamsters. Maybe a killer Rottie or Pit might have some fun with it, but as a rule, nice little doggies do not eat hammies. The Hamster still might show, so don't make any calls yet. They are nortorious masters at escaping their cages, but lots of times, they will show their cute little faces. Hang in there.

yes, dogs will eat hamsters. I would continue looking for it, try to keep the dogs locked up in a room that you know the hamster is not in, and keep looking. I don;t know when a good time to call the owner would be, I wouldn;t want to ruin their vacation, but I also wouldn;t want to keep the info from them, sorry i have no advice there.
