As an astronomer, you wish to find the ( f ) force of a moving meteorite by using the formula F = ma. You know the (m) mass of this meteorite is 12 tons and that it is ( a ) accelerating at a speed of 105 miles/hour. What is the force of this meteorite??



As a customer, you are hired to construct renaissance costumes for a college play. You wish to build a type of cone hat for the noblewomen. You want to know how much material you will need for each hat. You are going to start with large circles anc cut a 12'' radius, which will determine the hat's height. Then you will overlap the cut ends to make a cone. The area of a circle is determined by the formula A = Pie r to the second power. How much material will you need to build one hat??

Newtons first law states that an object in motion will stay in motion unless acted on by a force. If you are trying to compute the forces acting on the meteorite (the F in F=ma is net external forces), I'm not sure your question is stated correctly. 105 miles/hour is an expression of speed, not acceleration. If the speed is a constant 105 miles/hour, then acceleration is 0, and F = ma = 0 (in other words, there are no external forces acting on the meterite - keeping in mind that a force acting on the metorite would act to speed it up or slow it down). If 105 is an acceleration it should be written in the form 105 miles/hour^2. In which case the answer would be (1260 tons miles/hour^2). Units are very important in this answer.

The description for the hat is unclear, at best. However, if I'm imagining it correctly, it sounds as though it's half of a circle rolled up to make a cone. That said use (Pi(r squared))/2 to find the area of the half circle.

12*12=144 sq. in.

144*3.1416=452.39 sq. in.

452.39/2=226.195 sq. in.

Cloth is measured in yards.

1 sq yd.=1296 sq. in

226.195/1296=.175 sq. yd.

You will need .175 sq. yd. of material to make one hat, if I have interpreted the question correctly.

Another possibility is that since "you will cut a 12" radius is that the circle will be quartered instead of halved. In that case you need to divide be 4 where, in the division steps above, you would have divided by 2.

452.39/4=113.1 sq. in.

113.1 sq. in./1296 sq in.=.087 sq. yd.

You'd need .087 square yards or, rounded off, .09 sq. yd.

As I said before, the question is poorly written and unclear as to the exact cutting and construction of the hat. This is about as good as I can do.

These are both simple formua questions. You just need to plug the numbers into the formula, and it tells you the answer.

First one:

F=ma or (Force)=(mass)x(acceleration)
F=12tons x 105 miles/hour
F=1260

This answer may not be correct though. You may need to convert your units to metric units for completeness.

The second one:
A = Pie x r^2 or (area)=3.14 x (radius) x (radius)
A = 3.14 x 12 x 12
A = 3.14 x 144
A = 452.16

you must convert the units to metric so 12 tons = 12000 kg and 105 mh is 46.9393365 m per sec so we have 12000 * 47 = 564 KN. Second Q I'm not entirely sure what you mean

F = 1260
