Pop over to Mercury Marine .com look under outboards, and then sterndrives. A picture is worth a thousand words. Mercury is the only one left the builds both.

Thanks for the other question. We know now it is not an outboard.

Inboard/outboard has the engine inside the boat under a shell near the back, but on the inside and the out-drive or "foot" or propeller area sticking out through the wall in the back. An outboard motor hangs off the back of the boat by a set of clamps and the whole engine is exposed.

Well if the whole motor is hanging out the back the chances are you have an outboard. If the engine is in the back of the boat with only the drive (drive coloum & propeller)out the back chances are it's an inboard/outboard.

Most inboard/outboard combinations consists of a modified auto engine mounted inside the hull of the boat and linked to a gear driven- out drive -that goes thru the transom into the water

Out board engines are complete one piece units mounted outside the boat and onto the transom

If your boat has an outboard engine it will be mounted on the transom or in an engine well. If it has an IO the engine will be inside the boat within the hull structure, and the outdrive is run out through the hull ..

Do you see an engine hanging off the back of your boat? If so, it's outboard. If not, it is inboard.

On ski boats, the motor is under that big bump in the middle of the boat. It's an inboard.

if the engine is within the structure of the boat, it is I/O or inboard. Outboards have the enigne hanging off the bac with Honda, Mercury, Evinrude, etc painted all over it....pretty obvious

On the back, will be a huge motor if it's outboard. If it's inboard/outboard you will just have a prop.
