I think there are a number of criteria that have to be present in order to call someone your best friend.

1. He/She must be trustworthy, since you really need someone to really open up and talk about your deepest fears or happiest joys or even about the occasional cafeteria news of "who is cheating on whom" ...you know be able to gossip without what goes between you becoming national news.

2. He/She must be true in the sense that he/she really cares for you and so when something good happens to you he/she doesnt get jealous etc but he/she is happy for you.

3. Same interests can be a double edged sword. This is because by having the same interests you A. may come closer to each other or B. get bored of each other. I guess it is cool if you have the same interests but not too many same interests.

4. Another important thing that qualifies someone as a best friend is time. I mean you cant really meet someone and in 2 months time you become bestfriends. If you want a quality best friend then you both have to go through hardships, joys, leave away from each other for some time and/or some reason etc. If the friendship lasts and that person still calls you to see how you are etc then yes you can call him/her a best friend.

5. Last but definitely not least, that person has to like you for who you really are. People that talk to you because you are famous, beatifull, rich, straight A's student etc might be fun to have around but they are definitely not best friend material. You need a person that you can be with when you are without make up, when he/she can lend you money when you are in a tight situation and overall a person that cares for you because of who you are and not because of what you are or how you are.

6. You have to understand that you cant go in search of a best friend. Best friends are like love...they just happen.

I hope this helped you. If you never find a special person to call best friend dont worry though. In the modern world we live in it is not the easiest thing to find someone with whom you are on the same frequency and have the same ideals.

It depends. Are you referring to yourself as a potential best friend to someone or someone as a friend to you?
