Its not that hard if you are a decent mechanic. You need to move the exhaust out of the way by popping it out of the brackets then 2 straps to drop the tank and you are half way there. They cost about $400 from GM

DO NOT buy after market they will fail quickly... i have no affliation with GM just experience with this vehicle.

One question are you just getting bad readings from your guage because some models the fuel sensor is seperate. So if that is the problem check into that first... If you arent getting fuel double check your fuses and then replace the fuel pump. or sending unit as it called.

good luck... hope the tank is empty it can be quite heavy

I guessing that you are talking about the unit for you fuel gage.
If you fuel pump in in your gas tank, you may have to drop you gas tank, however, get a drawing of you fuel/electrical system to see just where the unit may be found. You may do this by going to the maintenance manger at the Chevy dealer, they are usually good about giving print out of the system, or, you can go to your library, which should a vast selection of repair manuals that will give you all the information and for a few cents you can make all the copies you want.
