If your friend is of college age and is intellectual, I recomend "Freakanomics." I loved it. Civil Disobedience by Thoreau is good as well, if you like philosophical type reads. The full edition of Night by Elie Weisel is great and so is Memoirs of a Geisha.
*if you say how old your friend is and a little something about him/her, this would be easier!

I liked the book, "Nothing but the Truth". Its a smaller sized book (150pages) but the plot more than makes up for it.
A middle school kid refuses to sing the national anthem in class even though it is required by the school. He gets in trouble but some civil rights groups step in and sew the school. Pretty soon the incident is in the national news and everyone is talking about this kid has the right to not sing the anthem if he wants.
*Spoiler* Eventually the kid and his family relocate to another school where it is not required but they sing it anyway. The kid starts crying and the teacher asks why. The kid says, "I don't know the words".

Freakonomics was a great book and top of the NY best seller list sometime last year. It looks at the economics of the world and puts it in a totally original and VERY interesting perspective. It compares things like sumo wrestlers to school teachers.
