It's an outdated idea. It doesn't still apply unless you are the strictest traditional person.
The rule was for true white, hence why we have "winter white".
There are many other old rules that some people follow, and others disregard.
1. Black: Labor Day - Memorial Day, not Memorial Day - Labor Day (opposite of white)
2. No Tuxes before 6 PM
3. No brown shoes with dark suits
4. No diamonds during the day
5. Hair should only be long if you are under 30 or unmarried
6. No sandals after Labor Day
7. No white dress for second wedding (or third, fourth...)
8. No white shoes after Labor Day
9. Best dress for church

These are the ones I can remember, but I'm sure there are other rules that people have forgotten, or no longer apply. The main thing now is to dress for you, what looks good on you, what you like. Fashion slaves end up nowhere except poorer than they started with a closet full of clothes they can never wear again.

In the days of Emily Post and Miss Manners, white was only acceptable between Memorial Day and Labor Day. But I live in Southern California where we don't have much of a winter, and most people wear white all year. My brother makes it a point to wear Hawaiian shirts, shorts, and flip flops on Christmas.

I don't see anything wrong with wearing white after labor day. If someone has a problem or makes a comment you tell them that you love Express and that you'll be happy if they want to take you on a shopping spree. That should shut them up!

There is NOTHING inherently wrong with wearing white after labor day or before memorial day. Wear what you want when you want. You are the one purchasing your wardrobe. That is only a control mechanism by those who are not comfortable with themselves.

Traditionally, white can be worn again on Easter, then not again until Memorial Day, but I think today, white is acceptable and looks good at any time of the year.
