I have read all the answers so far....BUT a lot of you are missing the point. If someone is unable to work its a different story BUT there are people out there who PRETEND they are sick and arent really. They get enormous benefits like looking after others (Care allowance) when I have seen that particuar person who needed care running around here and therem shopping and buying everything possible and the carer who gets sickness benefits but goes on one holiday after another...to spain, Portugal, Yugoslavia etc. goes to art classes and to yoga but says that she doesnt have energy to work and feels tired. You bet she feels tired running around enjoying herself all the time!! Also someone else I know pretends she has arthritis and cant move and yet uses a fitness cycle every day and does all the things a fit person can do. I cant report them because I know them and I would feel that I have betrayed them yet there IS resentment when know they are getting hundreds of pounds a week, getting things done to their houses that we, the ordinary people cant afford. To see young unmarried mothers getting a good flat in a good residential area free when my daughter has had to pay 40% tax and buy her own flat in the same block. the unmarried mother stays at home all day, smokes cigarettes and is on the phone all the time (you can see her near the window)....why cant she go to work and pay something into the scheme. This is the sort of thing people are complaining about...not the geniunely sick person, not the person that cant really and truly help themselves, not the person who has tried his or her hardest to get a job and cant get it for some reason. Its the lazy lay abouts who say "Oh...I cant work. I havent been to work for so long and I dont want to go back to work. " That is the sort of person that we all feel resentful about. NOT the geniune cases.

It could be worse! I work for a company and the MD has a son is employed by the company - I say employed, because the son doesn't actually do any work. The son is paid as much as me, is there less time than me - and has just turned 19 years old - and I can't get a pay rise because the son is considered to be a 'direct' worker (a money earner for the company) and I am considered to be an 'indirect (administration - I don't make the company money). Then, with the sum I earn - I still have to pay out for people that have no intention of ever finding a job! I am the only female employee in the company, sign cheques and make executive decisions - do you reckon this could hold up in court as sexual discrimination?

We need a better system to weed out the ones who have a genuine need from those who sponge. I like the fact that there's a safety net in our social security system - any of us could fall on hard times - I think the problem with a lot of society's issues is that the stigma has gone. I don't mean we should go back to the days when teen mums were forced to hand over their babies or people would rather starve than accept handouts, but there should be enough of a social conscience to make handouts a last resort. You're not being extreme, either, saying "some people". Some people need to read the question.

My friend is 17, and on Christmas day she left home to escape her abusive mother(also an alcoholic). She lived in a B&B paid for by her boyfriends dad for 3 months while the council tried to sort out some help for her. They then found her a flat for £40 a month, and she is on benefits now (although it took until May to sort this out). She has a part-time job and is studying for her A-levels, after which she hopes to get a degree in Psychology. Everytime her mum bumps into her, she screams abuse at her and makes her life a living hell. She recieves no help from her other relatives. She has recieved no grants (which the council promised her), and his still managed to kit out her flat so it is still moderately comfortable. Now, i know you are talking about people who have no intention of getting a real job, but how exactly would the government decide who was intitled to benefits? Stopping benefits, even for some people, would be disastorous, and i do not think my friend could have coped without the extra help.

I agree - the unemployment benefit system needs a serious shake-up, it's far too easy to legally work the system to stay on the dole indefinitely.

Did you know that if you 'forget' to sign one time you are signed off and can then re-apply, thus starting the cycle all over again with no requirement to go on job schemes etc? Plus for those who actually WANT to get a job but can't, the job schemes (New Deal etc) are not available until you've been unemployed 18 months!

Easy lifestyle?, living in the ghetto. Some people actually need the help. To cut off a social program because of a few "bad apples" would be a mistake.

Maybe its just me but I don't know any people like that.
If you are talking about people on welfare, how many do you know personally to know that they don't want to work?
I don't think anyone wants to be poor,or live in substandard housing,I'm sure they would prefer their life be different. There are people trying to do better some that have made it after being on welfare for awhile.
I don't see this easy life style you speak of,I'm sure there are people that think they are"getting over"on the tax payers in every sector of life. Some times its large corporation that do no good, like the tobacco industry, paying little or no taxes.
I personally would rather my tax dollar go to help a needy family have a better life than to mutli million dollar corporations that get government subsidies paid for by you and me.

Are your children old enough to live on their own? Just kidding.

I wish I didn't have to work and the government would pay me to stay home, but I haven't figured out how yet. So, yes I'm very sick of my paycheck being reduced to let other people do what I can't!

Do you mean the people from New Orleans? You know, the ones that never had a job to begin with? Or do you mean the ones that would have their self-esteem damaged if they had to work? Or do you mean the ones that blame racists for their lack of employment? Or the ones that are to drunk or stoned to function? Or the ones that believe Mommy and Daddy will take care of them for life?
Welcome to the gimme society. But remember "it's not their fault". Blame Bush. They all do.
