IEEE1394 (Commonly called FireWire) is an extremely fast mthod of connection a computer system to a peripheral device. Originally made most common in Apple/Macintosh systems (FireWire is their name for the !EEE1394 connection standard).

This system is often used for connecting devices that need a high speed connection such as Digital video camera, external hard drives, external CD/DVD burners, etc. USB 2.0 has nearly equivalent speeds now, however firewire also allows for networking systems together.

If you have a IEEE1394 port on your computer ad a use for it, it can be an EXCELLENT mode of trnasport for data. If you don't have one and don't already have a need for one, however, it isn't worth upgrading until needed.

Firewire is a port on the back on the computer (usually laptops) and was used to connect to devices like digital cameras, external storage devices, external CD drives and even old iPods. It's also called IEEE 1394 port. Hardly anyone uses it now after USB came. USB is faster than firewire and most devices are now USB compatible than firewire.

One of the fastest peripheral standards ever developed, which makes it great for use with multimedia peripherals such as digital video cameras and other high-speed devices like the latest hard disk drives and printers. =)
