WORKS:
Chris Cornell's most popular band, as everyone else has mentioned, is Soundgarden. He has also indulged in side projects such as MACC, Alice Mudgarden and Temple of the Dog where he worked with his Grunge Era colleagues Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains. After Soundgarden's demise, he created a solo album with a surprisingly softer sound than Soundgarden. He joined the instrumentalists of Rage Against the Machine after their frontman left them and the new band was named Audioslave.
SIMILAR ARTISTS:
His vocal style is reminiscent of Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) when he wails in an impressively high-pitched voice that is considered highly unnatural with men. One might also note that his low-register crooning is similar to Ronnie Dio (Black Sabbath). Imagine a powerful head tone hum.
It's also good to note that his band Soundgarden is the first Seattle band to be signed by a major label during the Grunge Era that Nirvana popularized.
VOCAL AND LYRICAL STYLE:
His songs with Soundgarden usually tackle depression and death and are sang drudgily or are screamed. The songs coming from Temple of the Dog, on the other hand, may be considered his best vocal performance as he sings in a very bluesy, soulful voice that is surprisingly not present in Soundgarden. He then shows the world his pop sensibilities with his solo album, and to his fans' surprise, there is a minimal amount wailing and screaming to be heard. It's sad to note how his voice has degraded over the years due to screaming, and if you listen to Audioslave, he does not reach the heights he used to when he was younger.
JAMES BOND?
Definitely a shock choice. But with the current direction of the movie, he might be the right fit. Rough, bluesy voice? Good looks? Mainstream sensibility? Sounds like he's the man.

He's fronted Soundgarden, Audio Slave, and also has a solo album from a coule of years back.
Oh, and don't forget Temple of the Dog where he did a duet with Eddie Vetter from Pearl Jam. "I'm going Hungrrrrrrry"

Not only was he the lead singer of Soundgarden and Audioslave but he was also in a band with Eddie Vedder which I can't think of the name right now but they had a song Hunger strike, he was a big part of the Seattle rock movement.
