It sounds like you need someone to talk to with an unbiased opinion. Everyone needs to feel connected somehow. I know you don't know me, but you can IM me if you'd like to talk.

Be couragous and be friendly. Learn how to talk to and relate to people and find common ground with them. This does not mean that you should co-sign behaviour that is against your moral beliefs, but people are still people everywhere; no one is perfect and we all have our different strengths and weaknesses. Your strengths will compliment others' weaknesses, if you give yourself that chance.
Be knowledgeable of what you speak, and don't just make a lot of noise. Pretty soon, people will see you as credible in your field of knowlege and they will seek you for advice.
Live your life according to your moral upbringing and don't compromise -- don't be rude or argumentative about it, just don't allow other people to sway you from your beliefs for convenience, or even friends' sake. This will also give you credibility as someone with integrity -- the kind of person that people like to know.
Concentrate on those good things about your life, and don't focus on the negative, bad things that happen. All humanity has troubles, and realise that yours are no worse than anyone else's.
And smile.
Good luck!

Mr. Chivalry says, "Why would one feel alone? It sounds as if there's no connection with any of the surrounding people. Has there been any attempts to make any connections? Are there any defenses or walls put up? Has there been any situations in the past to force a wall or defense to be put up? Those are questions to think about."
Mr. Chivalry has spoken.

You are not connecting to the world around you. Everyone feels like that at some point, to some extent. If you feel like that all the time.. Allow yourself to actually start connecting to people in a real way.. Most people are nervous sometimes, and then like it when they get out of the box.

Try to instill feelings of gentleness, compassion, and empathy in yourself towards other people. Feel the connection between you and other human beings. We pretty much all the same. Look deep. We all have human bodies, minds, and emotions. We are all born into this world the same way and we will all die someday. Do some yoga and meditation. They will help you find your center and align your chi. Tune in to yourself and try to feel the human connection.

When I'm surrounded by people, I deliberately stay back and alone. Just hearing them talk and watching the way they act is enough to make me want to stay back from them and be alone within myself.

Pray and tell God how you feel, ask Him to send you peace. It is better to be alone than in bad company. Jesus knows exactly how you feel, if you turn to Him he knows how to comfort you. Also, try reading some scriptures.

First of all you must accept yourself for who you are...your strengths, your weaknesses, your flaws and faults. Find positive things about yourself, be proud of who you are and don't compare yourself to every other Joe on the street....
I've been where you are and it CAN get better..
Hugs to you, Marilyn
