Do you bring one in from the parking lot to use, or take one from inside the store?

Why not just grab one from the lot? There is less chance of a cart hitting your cart that way.

Usually inside the store, because i often don't decide until i get in whether i need a cart or just a basket. However, our local grocery store has a sign outside that says, "Be an angel, bring in a cart" or something to that effect, and I always bring one in, even if I don't need it! On my way to sainthood...

That depends on my planning.
Sometimes I will go into the supermarket and carry everything in my hands. Obviously, I don't have that much to carry! (In fact, I rarely shop in supermarkets, and buy all my food organic)
At other times, if I realize the need for a shopping cart while still in the parking lot, I will grab one. However, it can happen that I do not realize the need until I am in the store and then I will take the next available one.

From the lot, I try to give the people pushing carts a break once and awhile. Plus, who knows if there are any inside. Ever try to find one on a Sunday at the grocery store?...better to get it out side.

If there is a cart along the way from my car to the store entrance, I'll grab it . . . otherwise I'll get one from inside.

If there's one on my way I usually take it, some people just leave them in parking spaces. If it's raining or really cold, I just take one from inside I don't want to stop to get one from the parking lot.

Generally, if I'm passing one in the lot that is my choice. However, if there are only ones in the store I tend to go outside to wait, usually the ones in the store belong to someone. It's not worth it to get into a pissing contest over people's perception of ownership.

I'll normally check to see if there is one sitting inside. If there isn't, I'll get one from the car park.

EDIT: My reasoning for this is that if there are plenty inside, then it would simply cause clutter for everyone if people took them in from outside. There would be more trolleys than people in the shop.

I tend to grab one in the lot. There are so many places that don;t have them at the store

if there's one on the way into the store, then i'll take it. or if another person is just finished with their's, i'll take it from them, then they don't have to take it back or leave it in the way in the parking lot.
and SOMETIMES, if i'm really bored, i'll even grab 2 and take one extra back into the store with me...just to amaze people...now, that's what i call bored...
