1st remember that a betta isn't a human being. Bettas aren't social fish. At best they will ingore the other fish. At worse they will attack the other fish, or the other fish will attack them. Honestly betta are happier alone. Females are often less aggressive than males, but they will still fight. I've had female bettas that beat up much larger males, and bullied huge sail fin mollies.
In generally unless you have a 10+ gallon tank I'd not mix bettas with anything other than a snail. Avoid fancy tailed guppies as bettas tend to view them as other bettas. Avoid tetras, and barbs. The betta may eat the small ones, and the larger one will nip his fins. Swordtails, platty, and mollies are good choices, but I'd avoid the larger sailfin/lyre tailed molly. Cory cats, pelcos, and other non aggressive bottum dwellers are good. (Avoid the larger aggressive catfish types.) In general any peaceful community fish should do fine. I'd avoid groumis as they act to much like bettas, and this can cause trouble. A dwarf gourmi in a female betta tank may calm things doen as the females with often consider it the top of the pecking order.
No betta male or female can be kept in the same tank as a male betta. (After mating the male betta defends the nest, and will attempt to drive the female away. As the female is stuck in the tank she may be killed.) Females will fight among themselves, but in a tank with enough room and cover they will work out a pecking order. (Adding a new betta will case all hell to break loose.)
Note that male bettas are very territorial, and will likely attack any fish than comes into it's turf. Which in a small tank is the whole tank. It's best to add a betta to other fishes tank than the reverse. (Often removing the betta to a jar for a week makes him forget he was king of the tank.) Just realize that bettas who are use to being alone may never accept other fish in their tank. Also some females won't even get a long with other females.
PS- Realize that betta aggression is sight based so the more cover the better.

any fish will go with the betta. alot of people think that they are mean and will kill your other fish but bettas are very nice i have had bettas in a tank with many different fish before such as zebra danios, cherry barbs, neons, catfish, ect. and they didnt do anything that harms the other fish. The only thing a betta CAN"T go into a tank with is another male betta because they will fight till the death so NEVER put two male bettas in the same tank. and if you want a female for the batta to mate with you MUST get at least 3 females because male bettas are very pick when it comes to the female they wil be mateing with.

What would make good tankmates for my betta?
Platies, guppies and other small fish are fine. Avoid small neon tetras, bettas have been known to dine on them. African dwarf frogs are not trustworthy neighbors for bettas.
What should I keep my betta in?
Even though you've probably seen bettas kept in small containers of water, please don't do this. Your betta will not thrive. The minimum size should be a standard goldfish bowl. 2 to 5 gallon tanks are even better.
How long do bettas live?
About 2 to 3 years.
How much should I feed my betta?
About 3 to 4 flakes twice a day. You can even let a couple of days go by without feeding your betta. Try to avoid overfeeding your betta, he will live longer.
How often should I change the water?
Use your judgement. If the water appears pretty dirty, it's time to change it. Bettas in small containers, such as cups or goldfish bowls can have their water entirely changed. Put the betta in a cup while you clean out its tank. If in a small fish tank, you don't have to change all the water at one time.

usually when you buy a betta fromt he store they are males. The males are very aggressive and its not a good idea to put them together with any other fish. I used to have 3 bettas and I had there tanks right next to each other and they were constantly charging the glass. The only time you can put them with another fish is when they mate. Which even then after the process is over the male attacks the femal.

Ok well i have my beta in a 10 gallon tank with one alge eater and 3 regular dinos and they get along fine so far i have not seen any fighting or anything plus i have plenty of plants in there to hide or rest on . also you have to remember that you 1 gallon of water per fish and also beta are top dwellers and you might want to get fish that like to be in the middle and bottom so he wont feel teratorial about the top. i think 5 or 6 fish to a 10 gallon tank is cool enough. O and i always feed my beta first to make sure he eats then evryone else.

There arnt too many choices. Bettas live in vernal ponds and mud puddles in their natural habitat. They are different than most fish in that they are LABERYNTH fish. This family of fish has an actual lung, as well as gills. With that being said, they are able to live in shallow pools with a minimal amount of oxygen in the water. Its for this reason that they dont come in contact with many other species of fish in the wild, and are inharently very terratorial. My only suggestion would be a gourami of some sort. As these are also LABERYNTH fish. But I wouldnt worry about it getting lonely. They are content by themselves. Have you concidered breeding them?

My son has a beta with a little tetra. They have gotten along swimingly but I don't know if it's actually company. I'd skip another fish and put in some plants, houses.

If the fish is female then you will be able to put more females into the same tank but if the fish is male then it is best that it is by itself unless you want it to fight.

there is a reason why they are called "fighting" fish. because they prey on toher fish. dont worry about a fish being lonely. they only have an average memory of 5-10 seconds. you interaction throughout the day is enough for him.
