So true story, I live in New Jersey, so someone pumps my gas for me, and at the gas station today I only had a ten. I specifically asked for 10$ regular cash, and even (like I always do) held the bill out for the guy. He didn't take it immediatley, and ste the pump for fill. I didnt realize this untill it got to about $23. I did not have that much cash on me, and after much argument with the guy I ended up charging it to my credit card because they wouldnt let me leave. (sonething I did NOT want to do.) I've only been driving like, a year and a half, so that's never happened to me before, and I had no idea what to do. Should I call the manager of the place and demand my money back (I guess it's too late now) Or what should I (or what would you) have done in the situation?

ps;;; it's illegal to pump your own gas in NJ, I could get fined for doing it.

You just have to pay it. You got the gas. I realize you are not allowed to pump your own gas there unlike the rest of the world so that is not an option. Try to pay closer attention when you pull up. Pull up so you can still see the numbers on the pump and if it gets close to how much money you have remind the attendant! Sounds like the guy just was not payin attention to your money or plain forgot! Personally, I always just Fill my tank every time I get gas. I get no thrill out of stopping for gasoline...so I want to stop as few times as I can.

Sounds like a miscommunication to me...Things like this will happen in life occasionally...Just gotta roll with it and move on. Other than having to charge it when you did not want to, you got what you paid for at least!

I live in Jersey too. Let me guess, the attendant is a dot head. Right?
I would have given him the $10 dollars and explained to him that it was his fault for notunderstanding what you asked for. A long time ago i worked in a gas station in Union County, and i was held responsible for any errors. So if someone asked for $5 and i gave $10, i was out the $5 from my pocket. Same with this Indian friend of yours except he did not want to accept responsibilty for his mistake. Remember, the customer is always right!
Sorry about your problem and good luck in the future. This probably wont be the last time this woill ever happen to you.

Well, I doubt that they will give you any money back, but you should call the manager and tell them what happened. I worked in a gas station a looonnnnggg time ago, and our prepay settings only worked some times so we made a point of telling them "Stop it yourself". Next time, just keep an closer eye on the pump.

You definitely did the right thing and stayed. You don't need any cops on you for failure to pay. (You can get suspended or have your liscense revoked for even longer than a general suspension) I'd advise to stay away from what sounds like a mechanical pump and go with one that has a digital reader. You tell them you want 10$ on pump four and it shuts off by itself, end of story. I wouldn't frequent this station anymore.

This is someone trying to take advantage of you. Next time take their name and report it to the manager of the station. You can't ask for it back but you definitely complain and warn him/her that if this repeats you will be reporting this to the police and/or the BBB. Especially now with price gouging going on this should not happen. If this is a major brand (shell, Mobile, etc) you can contact their corporate customer service. Otherwise I would ovoid them and use another station if at all possible.
Sorry!

Its not like you can give the gas back, but you did get the gas. You will use the gas so you should pay for it.

You could complain to the manager, but that's about it. Just forget it and move on. Its a short-term inconvience, but you'll get over it

You did get the gas that you paid for. You can complain to the manager however they don't have to give your money back. Next time pump it yourself. If you only have 10 dollars to your name, you obvioulsy can't afford full service.
