A wild card spot is awarded to the MLB team with the best record in each league that did not win their division at the end of the season.
One per league = Two wild card teams total.

There is only one spot in each league for the wild card. If your team is in the NL, chances are they have a better shot as most teams in the NL have worse records than those in the AL this year. The AL is having an amazing year this year with the Red Sox, Yankees, White Sox, Blue Jays, Angels, A's, White Sox, Twins all in contention and last but not least the Tigers who will win the AL Central easily and have the best record in all of baseball, but may lack the experience to win in the playoffs, although that didn't really hurt the 02 Angels, the 03 Marlins, or the 05 White Sox when they got there for the first time in years. (I know the Marlins were in it in 97 but with veteran players).

There is one Wild Card sport for each league. Each division winner makes the playoffs, and the team with the best record that doesnt win its division gets the wild card. The team with the best record in its league plays the wild card team in the 1st round.

Each league gets one wildcard spot. If your team is third, as of now, they would not be getting into the playoffs!

Thanks to the brilliance that is Bud Selig, each league gets ONE wild card team that is awarded to the non-division winner with the best record. Of course, given the interleague schedule and unbalanced play, this benefits teams in a weaker division and/or who play a weaker interleague schedule (case in point: the Cardinals, whose "rival" each year is the sucky KC Royals).
