Washington DC was built on a swamp. Before there was ac, our elected officials would get the heck out of DC before the weather got hot. They would spend time with their constituents. Now they hang around DC too long and find ways to waste our money and pass useless bills.

No more than central heating did. Where did you get the idea that they went home to their constituents, Steve? They all went away on vacation. With what they make, I want them in Washington 24/7. Furthermore, I don't think the issues they have been addressing this summer are useless.

You are right about the elected officials "camping out" in DC. But not sure it has anything to do with AC...

...how bout that we have professional politicians? i.e. Teddy Kennedy...now he is living proof that the good die young...when is he ever gonna go home?

...Maybe instead of turning off the AC, try making them work on commission, only have social security for their retirement...think something might be done then? you thunk!

Actually they dont hang around DC. The president spends a good chunk of his time in Texas, and Congress will have less then 80 working days this year.

I totally disagree with you.

The problem with our elected officials is that the work to LITTLE, not too much.

They spend most of their time campaigning or preparing to campaign for the next election, and when the time to hammer out a budget or a law comes, they shortcut it and compromise.

These compromises consist of adding things in that benefit someones constituents just to get his vote. When you have 50 of those, that adds up to several billion dollars in "pork" that is spent merely to get things passed.

They only spend approx.73 days per year in DC as it is.
The starting salary is $165,000.00 a year, they arrive in DC on Tuesday,on Wed.they vote on a few bills and on Thursday they fly back home. There should be a lot of them in their states and districts to be with their constituents, instead they go on vacations etc. They should have to work full time at their jobs like everyone else has to do.Then maybe we would have a better government

Not only do AC save us , but thank goodness we remove the men in tights and wigs. So that we can have nude beaches and girls gone wild and all other freaky fun . So no one is sitting in DC using the AC , not even the Bush twins.

Unfettered industrialization - as a means to compensate for laziness rather than as a tool for progressivity - has been the ruin of the country.

So in a way - YES

We need to get each bill to be about 1 item ONLY. Can't have it about money, because one can cloak any and everything under that. That would make our legislators accountable. They would have to run on their record. The people would also stop being apathetic.

I blame Dr. Wayne Dyer and his "Looking Out for #1" tome for shifting the focus from caring about one another to "ME, ME, ME!!"

The shift was gradual, but we have now become so enamored with ourselves that we have a "right" to know everything, a "right" to have everything our way, a "right" to do whatever we want, whenever we want… and everyone else is a distant, distant second. Self-esteem isn't a bad thing, but "me at the expense of everyone else" is the bottom of the barrel when it comes to community and values.
