I have a Pontiac Fiero that was doing that for a while. My dad is a mechanic and he fixed it for me. The starter had gone out. Whenever I tried to start it, it would make this weird clicking sound.

OK, sounds like you said that you had a valve job done on the engine, this is why you are reinstalling the heads back on the engine. Is this so? If it is then what you need is 3 things for an engine to run. Spark, fuel, and compression. I will assume that you are getting fuel into the engine so this should not be our problem. Compression should be equal through all the cylinders, so have a compression test done and make sure that you dont have a big drop off in compression between any of the cylinders. And finally spark. Are you getting spark to the plugs? You may have a good spark and it still wont start if the spark occurs at the wrong time. Remove the distributor cap and bring the #1 piston to top dead center. Now look at the rotor, it should be pointing to the #1 wire on the distributor cap. If not, then you have the distributor in wrong and spark is firing at the wrong time. If you have no spark, then you will need to test the control module in the distributor to see if it dstill any good.
Good luck....if you have any more questions after you do these basic tests, feel free to e-mail me anytime.

mailbox1024 pretty well summed it all up.
Often times, when a vehicle has seen a major service, a component or wire can get overlooked. Take a good look at your engine and see if anything is loose, hanging, placed wrong, etc. Since the heads were removed, I am going to assume that the engine was NOT taken out of the vehicle? So this will limit your search to the top end only, but I would look for any loose connections that may have pulled loose during disassembly.

OK number one..a grand am is a DIS(distributorless ignition system)..I am assuming you have the 3.4l GM problematic motor(sorry)..If he changed the intake manifolds and headgaskets..did they check the heads to see if they are warped(since they are aluminum)..did they do a tuneup on it as well..did they check the plugs and see a white residue on them?..also is it possible that they did,t charge up the battery ?
All these things could make it hard to start...
Other then that ..starter ,alternator..or fuel related problem...

make sure the car is timed right...also that it has fire going to the plugs....also try priming it with a little ether into the fuel injection....but not to much...ether is like crack for cars
