nothing really to do to prepare for it except to maybe take a few pain killers before hand and to purchase some antibacterial cream for after wards, I wouldn't dream of telling you to think about it first, because no doubt you already have - know its permanent and this is what you want, so best wishes and enjoy your new tat!!!

Lower back tats are a bit on the ouch side. You can buy some topical anaesthetic which you should apply 30 minutes before you get the tattoo, then hold on tight baby. Definitely research your artist ( have a look at their portfolio) and have a good idea of what you want tattooed. Make sure the needle is clean. The artist will likely remove it from a sealed plastic sac and insert it in front of you, but always be careful because you never know.

My sister has one on her lower back! She said it took 3 hours to do. It goes across her lower back just above her rear.
I have thought about getting a small one on the calf of my leg. Something not to big and not to small. I was told to take Aleve before you go and get it done.
P.S. as for the Child birth thing if you should ever need an epidural the hospital will not be able to do one if your tattoo is on the area of where they would need to put it in. So really think about it before you do one there. You could go between your shoulder blades with it. At least there if you wore a tank top, bikini top or halter top it could be seen. Your choice though!! GOOD LUCK!!

Take a Vicodin or a percocette, make sure you are not allergic first, and they are a perscribed narcotic so use your own judgement.. Also never take them unless needed, you can get addicted real quick.. But just one or two to help with the pain is not gonna hurt anyone.. The lower back isn't too sensitive so the pain should not be too bad, just a burning sensation, but I know you can handle it. Make sure you see some of this dudes work first. Make sure he is clean, ask for some refrences... Make sure you don't get a tat you will regret in 10 years also. Like F-U-C-K tatooed across your nuckles. You know what I mean. If your dead set, don't let anyone talk you out of it either.. Tatoos are fun and personal and it should be your choice.. I am sure you have accomplished all of these things allready, but just incase you missed any.. Good Luck----Send me a pic when it is done, Just click on my pic for my 360 contact info

I'll give you the same advice I gave my 16 year-old cousin.
If you want a tattoo, have someone draw out exactly what you want. Then fold it up and wait a year. If you still want the *exact* same thing in the *exact* same spot, get it.
If you're looking at getting a tattoo in the next few days, I'd advise you think about how low on your back the tattoo is going to go. Your tailbone/spine will ***HURT*** to get tattooed.
If you're at all ticklish, I'd ask the tattooist if you can have Ora-gel or Lidocaine spread on your back before the tattooing starts. Both will temporarily numb the skin, and prevent you from twitching uncontrollably.

I'm 37 and have one on my lower back and HAVE NOT REGRETTED IT FOR ONE SECOND!!! If you really want it then why not? It does hurt like hell there though. The artists don't like for you to take aspirin or anything because they say it can make you bleed more, but I highly recommend taking something. I borrowed a zanax from a friend and it really helped relax me. Make sure the area is good and clean, and purchase some antibiotic cream beforehand because you may not feel like going straight out to buy it afterwards. Also, wear something loose fitting or "low riding" for a few days afterwards to lessen irritation to the area, and be aware that some of the ink will come off for the first few days so don't wear anything you don't wish to ruin. Best of luck to you!

I think they're very sexy. I don't have any tattoos. I've heard that you should not drink any alcohol or take asprin; anything that thins the blood before you go in.
I did piercings when I turned 18 instead. Most of 'em are out now. I'm 29. I think the principal is the same. Make sure its a design that means something to you. It'll be there forever!!

Just try to relax. Drink lots of water, and eat something before you go. You lose blood and may get a little light-headed. I have two tattoos- a big one on the middle of my back, and a small one on my lower back.
During the tattoo, try not to tense up. It will hurt more if you do. Good luck!

I have a huge tattoo on my lower back, and it is AWSOME!!! I've had it fot two years and I still love it.( no matter what some of you people say. To each your own) I thought about it long and hard to make sure it was the correct one ,and went for it. Just stay relaxed, and don't get drunk or take pain killers. If they know your ****** up they won't tat you. And by the way , you can get an epidural. I just had one 2 months ago.

I have several tattoos, including one on my lower back. It was the most uncomfortable of all that I've gotten so far...not excruciating, though. Take an anti-inflammatory like acetaminophen or Tylenol an hour or 2 before and wear comfortable clothing-nothing tight, especially around the waist. For a few days after it'll be sore, too-so looser things will be more comfortable. I love mine, though, and would do it again!

I got a tattoo above my hip. you get used to the needle but it the stretching and pulling of the skin that hurt me more. take some headphones or go with a friend that can talk to you so you don't focus on the pain. just try to distract yourself if you have a low tolerance for pain. it really isn't all that bad. it feels like a burn for a couple days but it's minimal. after you get the tat don't pick the scab or else it will fade. you may need a touch up of colors if you are getting them in about 5 years or so.
