I don't think it was a lunar eclipse because I don't see it on any charts. And you'd have heard about it on the news, you'd also have seen the phases of the moon. I think it was dust in the atmosphere or even pollution depending on where you live :-) this has been answered before on Yahoo answers (see link below) perhaps that will help you.

Where I live the moon was just a sliver to the extreme west at 10:00 and dark maroon

I think what you may have seen was Mars. There's some kind of special thing going on right now where Mars is closer to the Earth than it ever has been and will stay that way for a couple of days. they say it wont happen again for hundreds of years. That's really cool you got to see it!

I've seen the red moon in Latvia and in Finland. It's something like more often near the seaside. But it was not last night. Last night I was sleeping :)

I did not see it, but what causes it is smoke (like from a forest fire) or ash (like from a volcano) in the atmosphere. I have seen it before. It is creepy!
