I build computers and have a good understanding about them. My desktop has an ASUS A7V8X-X motherboard with an AMD Athlon XP 1.6ghz processor. 512MB RAM, 2 80GB EIDE HDDs, and an ATI ALL-IN-WONDER RADEON 7500. (Among other things).

The computer does some strange things. If you leave it plugged in, the power light (and, thus, the computer's power) will flicker on and off at a slow yet increasing speed. This will happen whether or not you press the power button. When it finally powers up and remains powered constantly, the computer (I assume the motherboard speaker) beeps sporatically. Any ideas? Feel free to contact me (REAL EXPERTS ONLY) if you have experienced this with this MB/CPU.

My guess is that it is an old power supply (300W), which has been running for at LEAST 3 years, but I'm not sure. If this is the problem, should I get a more powerful one? Thanks.

The power supply needs replacing, it sounds like it has a short in it. The next place to check is the power button itself, it may have dirty contacts or be shorting out also. Increase the power supply to at least 400 watts or larger if you are planning any upgrades in the near future.

check the volt switch on the power supply. Make sure its set to 115 and not 220 I was in class one day setting up a computer working with another tech student and I set the volt switch on him and I told him "Don't forget to check the volt switch!" So needless to say he didn't listen to me and did what he did any way. When he did the computer would flicker just as u described it.

You are getting BIOS beep codes from the speaker that will lead you to the source of the problem. Go to the manufacturers website and look up beep codes for a list of their meanings.

you want to: press the start button and click run. then you want to form msconfig and click ok. there is BOOT.INI tab, both variations are in there. they are going to be contained in the bottom 2 of the record. you are able to click the verify all boot paths option, this can get rid of one, else replace the vacation decision to 0 secs. in case you google the mistakes message you'll commonly locate an outstanding style of assistance on the difficulty.

I agree, sounds like a failing powersupply, the flickering sounds much like a faulty capacitor.
