Yes, the person above me is correct about the proper way of shutting down a Windows computer. As for speeding up the startup / shutdown, I have a couple of recommendations.

1) I have seen that deleting out all of your temporary files will sometimes keep the computer from hanging as it is shutting down. Probably the easiest way to delete out all of your temp files is by running "Disk Cleanup". Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup. It will prompt you to select a drive; select your C drive. The first time it runs, the program will definitely take some time (5-15 mins) to inventory your computer and tell you what it can do. Once it comes back, you uncheck everything except for the "Temporary Files" and then have it delete all of them.

2) Defragment your system hard drive. After running your computer for months (and especially years!), files have become muddled all over your computer's hard drive. By running a defrag, the files will be more efficiently placed on your hard drive, making them faster to load. To do this, go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter. Again, select your C drive and then click the "Defragment" button. Depending on how long it has been, it could take 30 mins or several hours.

3) Unfortunately, the defrag tool from Windows won't be able to defragment files that are currently in-use (otherwise, Windows would crash as the tool is trying to move them). However, other developers have created tools that will do this. SysInternals has a great *free* tool that you can use to defrag the peskiest of files: http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/PageDefrag.html. Just follow the instructions, and that should help a bit.

Between these three things, I hope you'll notice a huge difference in performance, not only of the startup/shutdown, but of the entire computer.

If you are using Windows, the ONLY way to shut down correctly is by using the START button then click TURN OFF COMPUTER (Windows XP). If you are using Windows 98, then START, SHUT DOWN, and SHUT DOWN.

This allows Windows to do all its necessary housekeeping before closing, i.e., deleting temporary Windows files, and so on. Just switching off makes Windows very upset! You will accumulated hundreds of unwanted files on your disk and eventually Windows might just give up on you altogether.

yes there is a way to shut down computers:
always close all windows that are open before shutdown
make sure all the processes are over, check the flashing little light on CPU...it should stop if u are running nothing
if you use internet, u better log off rather than shutdown, and then shutdown..

To properly shut down your computer--hit the start key at the bottom left of your computer screen. Then you hit the turn of button and you have 3 options. Select shut down and that will take care of it. You can hit the restart button if you need to like reboot it if you are having problems like your screen is frozen up or something or to just refresh it. But if you just want to shut the whole thing down, always hit the shut down button. Then you do not need to push the power button on your computer box or your screen b/c that will take care of it. IF you are unable to shut it down like this, then you will have to hit the power button if your computer is completely frozen up and if you can not click to shut it down properly.
To speed up your computer, you need to delete programs that you have downloaded== the ones you are not using or buy more ram or memory-- I have never down that but I know my computer company can help me with that.

Also you can upgrade your DSL plan to help with speeding up the computer. DSL or broadband is much, much faster than dial-up.

Does Norton record an endemic? the premier and perfect thanks to easily be certain you do not have an endemic could be to backup all of your own information and then reinstall domicile windows thoroughly. Then if it nonetheless shuts down at random then it must be a hardware difficulty. putting out 2000 in probability-free mode may help you in deleting any information. (Hit F8 even as the workstation is booting up and then pick "probability-free Mode" even as a catalogue looks)

Start\Shutdown, do not just hold the power button until it goes off, unless it is locked up. The easiest way to speed up any computer is to increase the amount of RAM.
