They should make bars that cater to smokers. I do not like smoke when I am eating or having a drink with friends, so naturally I like the smoking ban, however in fairness there should be bars that allow smokers to smoke and drink if they choose.

I am an ex smoker, but even when I smoked, I hated being in a smoke-filled room especially when I was eating.

Ok, so people admit smoking is a choice, but I wonder how many of these people actually regret smoking in the first place. I did and glad to have given up after 20 years, I feel much better for it.

It was my own choice to smoke in the first place, so why should someone who has taken their choice not to smoke be forced to breathe in the smoke of others? So all these people who say that they should not be dictated to whether they smoke or not as totally correct and they should be allowed, 100%, but not in places that the masses collect, such as bars and restaraunts.

Its an argument without a win, as people say that the government is making the rules, at the end of the day it is going to make it hard for the smoker to have a drink, but there are many non smokers that don't go to pubs for a drink because it feels claustophobic due to too many smokers.

It is even worse in packed out pubs and clubs, cos you have to watch out for people burning you with cigarettes too, I have had it happen to me and someone ruinied a good pair of trousers of mine becasue they weren't watching what they were doing.

So it's swings and roundabouts to whether its right or wrong, but as far as good or bad, I can honestly say that reading about other places that have this in force, then it's a good thing - especially in places that serve food.

With this ban, they should pedestrianise some of the inner town areas for covered plazas outside these pubs so that people can sit to smoke if they wish.

When people get used to the idea, it will eventually be just another one of those things, just like the outcry about 24 hour pub opening making 1000's of new alcoholics.

I live in Ireland and we brought in the smoking ban for all work places over a year ago. At first I was against it because i am a smoker but now I don't have a problem with it. In fact I don't know anyone who does. I think that ye are doing the right thing by starting to introduce bans on smoking. No smoker has the right to endanger someone elses health.

I don't smoke, and I go to pubs somewhat frequently...especially on holiday! If people pollute themselves with alcohol which is actually unhealthy in large doses (and that's typically the only sort of dose you see people at pubs with!), why not allow them to smoke there as well?

The only reason I would think that the ban is nice is for the people who work at the pubs who always have to breathe it in. Nonetheless, I don't smoke, but I don't mind going into a smokey pub because I go there to drink which isn't healthy either. I am, however, pleased that many restaurants and such do not allow smokers around children and people who chose not to smoke.

Its another example of the government trying to tell us how to live and behave along with beef on the bone, their own think tank said the currently drug laws where riddled with anomalies and could see no reason why Cannabis should be illegal whilst alcohol and Tobacco where legal. Smokers pollute far less than drivers but are an easier target. At the end of the day it should be down to the individual to decide be that the owner the employee or the smoker or even the non smoker you could always use non smoking establishments instead and then market forces decide how many smoking bars there are

Massive intrusion on my right to choose. Our illustrious government's main argument is to protect pub workers. If (say)30% of the population smoke (don't fight with me about the percentage, 20%, 40% it makes no difference to the equation) then surely 30% of the pub workers smoke - not so?
Ergo, grant licenses to 30% of the pubs to allow smoking and let the smoking barmen/women etc choose to work in them. Ban food in those pubs if you must. If the smokiing pubs stay in business, then there's obviously a demand and the government is WRONG. I'm going to start attending Church Services and fart really loud, just to annoy that bunch of clowns as much as I'm annoyed.

Not a moment too soon! I'll be able to go to bars etc without sneezing unexpectedly while trying to look cool - happened once VERY unpretty... snot everywhere...total embarrassment. And we non smokers don't like stinking like an ash tray next day. Now we need to stop smokers congregating in doorways, dropping *** ends/packets and matches and lighters all over the place. Did you know they can even get giving up gum on the NHS!!!!! If they can afford the ciggies they can afford the substitute. It's all about nipples, anyway.
Thought this was supposed to be the UK site... why is f a g blanked out? It means cigarette here, not gay and even if it did mean gay, why is it a dirty word? Another example of cultural imperialism or pure ignorance (possibly mine?)?

I think it's good really. stops all non-smokers having to breath in all the smoke. Smokers get a choice smoke, or not smoke and they choose to smoke wheras non-smokers don't get a choice they have to put up with it. Well not any longer. My boyf' won't be happy though nor will the rest of my family! Oh well there's always outdoors!
