Sometimes the cramps are caused by overexertion of the muscles. Research has not identified precisely what causes nighttime muscle cramps. The problem is most likely with the nerves controlling the muscles rather than with the muscles themselves. Low levels of certain minerals known as electrolytes—magnesium, potassium, calcium and sodium—have long been linked to leg cramps. Try increasing these electrolytes in your diet. Sports drinks (such as gatoraid) contain these electrolytes.

Potassium deficiency. Search the internet to find the highest potassium source you can, and eat that for dinner, a few hours before bedtime.
This is called restless legs syndrome. I have it too. It's no big deal. It also helps to exercise your legs during the day. When I go the gym on leg day, I won't hurt too much if I take weight increases gently and work for reps, not weight.

try stretching before bed. also cramping can be a sign of dehydration or a lack of potassium in your diet. hydrate more and eat foods rich in potassium such as bananas.
