The cellphone system is so called because the service area which it covers is divided into smaller areas called cells.

Each cell is served by its own radio mast.

A cell 'phone, when it is switched on, transmits its identity at intervals, even if it is not in use, so that the system knows where it is and can route calls to that 'phone through the appropriate cell's transmitter.
