This is the question that is really at the heart of this whole Middle eastern dilemma. I do not want to go into the hole of anti-semitism or Israel bashing. In order to resolve this issue, we must calmly and intelligently deal with this situation. This means avoiding extremes and emotions due to a war we might not want.

The real question that must be answered, not getting into anti-semitic remarks or ridiculous and exagerated "jews started all the wars in the world" ---is the following---this is the real question people:

Is The US goverment, by supporting Israel unconditionally due to the jewish lobby, not acting in the interests of the American people in the long run? In other words, is this unconditionaly support, not in the interests of American people, and will it not come back to haunt us in the form of terrorist attacks?

No anti-semitism, no stupidity, just an objective response to this, because this question is a respectable question and deserves an answer.

If you go into bigotry, you cannot be taken seriously...I understand people have feelings on this issue. But you cannot be intellectually respected and make wild claims. We must ask the right questions, in order to have a productive discussion on the real issues at hand, and to resolve the greater issue of Israel and the ME crisis, because this spells the future of our country 's security , our fuel-security, and political influence in the world.

RJMAIL--(2nd answerer).

You are right, but I am of the beleif that our UNCONDITIONAL support of Israel, even when it has bombed Lebanon the way it has, shows the American biased support, which only harnesses more anger and terrorist attacks toward us.

Although I have no problem with Israel getting rid of terrorists for us, but its really not Israel I am concerned about...Its about the American response----if you look at the question...our goverment support of Israel...is that in our itnerests?

Yes...granted, Israel getting rid of terrorists is in our interests...But is OUR support of Israel unconditionally, in the face of everything that has happened....not in our interests because it produces terrorists AGAINST US?

furthermore, they are getting rid of terrorists, but on their border, they are doing nothing about the hezbolla in the US...rather angering them toward us...

but I see the validity of your arguement and I appreciate your response.

even though you may have allies or friends, it does not mean that you will allow that allie or friend to do whatever he wants and support his actions...

if your friend wants to burn someone at the stake will you support him unconditionally? This is an example and too extreme to be compared to Israel's response in Lebanon.

But Israel's actions in Lebanon could be concidered "extreme"---so, by this standard, would it not make sense to "pressure" your allie, just as allies do, to do another action and publicly denounce its actions and at the same time support it?

You can tell you friend what he is doing is wrong, but not necessarily not support him. But unconditional support FOR ANYTHING he/she does, is quite hypocritical, especially after reprimanding countries like Iran for its "restrictions on liberty" and "human rights" when Israel has done the same.

This bias, is what I mean by "unconditional support" not that we don't support Israel. There is BIG difference.

2006-08-02 07:02:05 · update #3

And my arguement previously was that the idea of supporting Israel for ANYTHING is biased, and not politically sound or in the interests of the American people, because it causes anger toward us.

I appreciate your response answerer 4

5th answerer, I answered your question on the support your allie arguement..

because terrorists vs. civilized world.

Yea, terrorists are against us, but we do not need more of them for being unfair. The fairer we are, the more understanding the arabs will be, and the more quickly the average arab will ceaze to support terrorism and themselves go against it.

Until then, they will support terrorism as their only outlet against Israel and the west for hypocritical actions. We are not bad people ,we just need to re-think our policy, tis all.

2006-08-02 07:09:34 · update #5

And I appreciate your answer, you should definitely, support your allies.

2006-08-02 07:09:56 · update #6

makavelli,

I do not appreciate your response...It is quite crazy and conspiratorial....The jewish lobby does not "hide its tracks" ...the jewish lobby is the jewish lobby, and they are very direct and clear...Its not them...its the leadership of our goverment and their reaction that we should focus on...

do not blame others for our downfalls...WE AND OUR GOVERMENT, not Israel, should re-think of a biased and "unconditional" support.

However, I do appreciate your initiative. But you must be more direct and clear, otherwise you will not be intellectually respectable and be concidered a bigot (are you?) It is true the jewish lobby has a strong influence on America...

What are WE going to do about it? The Israelis are just defending their interests. Maybe we should as well.

Aside from the conspiracy theories, I do think that the unconditonal support of the Israelis isn't in the American's best interest when it comes to foreign policy.

One of the major criticisms of America from the middle east is their continued blind support of Israel, and by assosciation, we make plenty of enemies that way, and consider Israel's renegade attacks as of recent, this isn't help the American position at all.

Especially when bush says "they need to stop doing this sh*t" and only be referring to Hezbollah, and not the BOTH of them.

The interests of America are a bit too broad for this to be an easy answer.

It is serving Bush's agenda, and definately pandering to his base. Many of the neo-cons are Zionists that believe that Israel should rule the entire Middle East (many because they think Jesus will return then and end the world...). It can also be seen to be supporting American aims at fighting terrorism, but I will get to that more later. Also, if Israel controls the entire Mid East, they may be more inclined to sell us oil cheaper, but I don't know if thats an active thought.

It does not support American interests in a lot of ways too. Our unconditional support of the horrible attacks that Israel is doing is ruining our moral standing in the world's eye. Even our silence when Israel kills another 50+ innocents with another bombing is seen as acquiescence.

There is also the terrorist element here. When a group of people feel oppressed by another larger and more powerful group, they turn to the only way to fight back that they have. Unfortunately, when they see hundreds of innocents killed, they think they have the right to return the favor in vengance. This, in my opinion, just makes both sides wrong, but it is what is happening. You cannot fight an ideology like that of the terrorists with bombs and guns. Unfortunately Washington hasn't gotten that memo.

This fighting is also driving up the price of oil on concern that it will actually affect supplies (there is no oil of note in Israel or Lebaonon). If this fighting escalates, especially if it moves to Saudi Arabia or Iran, we will see oil prices between $90 and $100 a barrel and gas prices pushing the $4 mark (if not higher). This will put a serious dent in our economy, and may cause a recession (if not worse).

Sum total, I do not believe that continued fighting in the Middle East is in our best interest. Some people may weigh things more heavily though.

Interesting question.
TIME magazine international edition just ran an article about this.

The writer thought that Israel actually was counting on the US to force Israel to stop its offensive. That would have allowed Israel to respond to Hezbollah's kidnapping of Israeli soldiers and firing of missiles on Israeli cities, while preventing things from getting out of hand and turning into an all out war.
However, the US did not reign in Israel. Why?

The writer speculated that the US did not reign in Israel, because the US has a score to settle with Hezbollah (over 230 marines that the Hezbollah killed) and it using Israel as a tool to strike Hezbollah indirectly.

So according to this TIME writer, the US is supporting Israel against Israel's secret wishes, for the US's own ambitions.

Interesting theory. I wonder if it's true?

Your question is more complex than it seems on the surface, but I am going to try a simple answer.

We support Israel because the Israelis are our allies. It is no different that the support we would offer Great Brittian, Canada, Saudi Arabia, or any other host of countries facing the same circumstances. Israel is fighting terrorists, and terrorists are the enemy of the civilized world.

As to whether it will increase terrorism! I would submit that terrorists are going to try and attack us whether we support Israel or not. The stated goal of terrorists is the destruction of Israel, and all western society.

Lastly I would submit that it will always be in America's best interest to stand up to terrorists wherever they may strike, and support any country that is willing to aid us in this cause.

No

Although the US government does support Israel, we are no more a puppet of Israel than they of us. We support the vigorously because they face the same problem we in America are dealing with---terrorism.

Israel is not at war with Lebanon, they are at war with Hezbollah--a rouge terrorist organization supported by Syria and Iran who is operating in Lebanon with the sole intent of destroying Israel and the extermination of all Jews.

"Hezbollah and its affiliates have planned or been linked to a lengthy series of terrorist attacks against the United States, Israel, and other Western targets. These attacks include:

A series of kidnappings of Westerners in Lebanon, including several Americans, in the 1980s;

The suicide truck bombings that killed more than 200 U.S. Marines at their barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1983;

The 1985 hijacking of TWA flight 847, which featured the famous footage of the plane’s pilot leaning out of the cockpit with a gun to his head;

Two major 1990s attacks on Jewish targets in Argentina—the 1992 bombing of the Israeli Embassy (killing twenty-nine) and the 1994 bombing of a Jewish community center (killing ninety-five).

A July 2006 raid on a border post in northern Israel in which two Israeli soldiers were taken captive. The abductions sparked an Israeli military campaign against Lebanon to which Hezbollah responded by firing rockets across the Lebanese border into Israel."

I list these so there is no doubt as to WHO Israel is fighting---the same organization we have had on the US list of terrorist organizations for years.

If an ally of ours is attacked by a common enemy, would there be ANY other action we would take but to actively support them? If the answer is anything other than yes to that question, I'd like to hear it.

You made a statement that "The fairer we are, the more understanding the Arabs will be". THIS is exactly the kind of Pollyannaish thought that is so wrong. These people have ZERO interest in you, your life, your family, how to get along, creating a beautiful world---they have NOTHING in common with you and have but a singular purpose---your death. You are an infidel plain and simple. It would be like thinking that you might be interested in becoming friends with Satan---if he would just be "fair" with you----would you? Could I change you mind to be friends with him? No and No..................

You see, it is not as if Israel was created and then we began to develop an alliance with them and began to support them. Elements within the Zionist community were well established within the power structures of the worlds great nations before the state of Israel was even established. When they decided to go forward with the establishment of the state of Israel they had already lined up and guaranteed support from the United States.

You could say that the state of Israel runs Washington by proxy but it is very hard to prove (they cover their tracks very well) but you can undeniably say that the Jewish lobby has immeasurable power in Washington and CAN NOT be challenged. That should raise enough eyebrows by itself.

But we have been trained to be very impotent and useless in challenging our leadership, so we will just say "that's messed up" and move on, while they continue to walk away with our very freedom and Independence. How can we be IN-DE PENDANT when it is obvious that our leadership follow and seem to DEPEND on the guidance and direction of the Israeli Lobby.

This is very serious, we better start waking up.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am sorry if i have offended you, but how am i a bigot because i believe that no special intrest group should be so powerful that it can stear the entire nation into foreign wars and into defending other nations at unproportional risk to our own. I don't care if they are jewish or muslim or budhist! no one group should hold so much power over such a diverse nation

No, because we are supporting terrorism by Israel against the entire nation of Lebanon. Sure, Israel claims to be targeting only Hezbollah and Bush parrots this same line, but look at the hundreds of dead, thousands of injured, one-fifth of the Lebanese homeless and terrified to travel or stay put. Our so-called "war on terrorism" should be renamed to "war against some terrorism".

Since the US has said it is waging a war on terror, and since it has designated Hezbollah a terrorists organization, and since Israel is now doing all the fighting and spending all the resources to combat it, from the standpoint of your question, the answer would seem to be that letting Israel do what it is doing is in support of US fight against terrorism while sparing US lives.

We have to support our allies. Isreal has always been our ally, most Arab countries have not. Isreal has every right to exist. The extreme Muslim terrorists have no desire to make peace with Isreal and have stated many times throughout history that their goal is to Wipe Isreal Off The Map! They are being attacked and retaliate accordingly. There is always collateral damage when in war and with the cowardly way Muslim extremist groups fight by hiding behind women and children, collateral damage is unavoidable.

Anyone that thinks we can reason with Hezzbollah (spelling? sorry) or any of the groups like them is OUT OF THEIR MINDS!! Read the Koran and go to their websites. They are commanded to kill the infidels. We are part of that group. We have turned a blind eye to terrorists for 20 or more years now. We have ignored atleast 10 attackes against us alone in the past 10 years that I can think of. To ignore them, try to make peace with them (Isreal has given up land and called cease fires many times to no avail), or reason with them is suicide (they were emboldened when they attacked us on 911...because we never fought back before). They will not stop until we are destroyed. We did not ask for it nor did the Isrealis. Muslim extremists started the wars. You don't blow up innocent civilians, cut off their heads, and gas the children off those you have a beef with to make a political statment. Only barbarian, evil, demons do such things.

If we don't support our allies when they are defending themselves, then who are we to defend ourselves when we need to, who will come to our aid if we ever need it.

It sickens me that because of passifists we are in this mess now. A bully doesn't stop because you walk away, ignore them, or give them concessions. That emboldens them to terrorize you more. Study sociology, psychology, the mind of Hitler and the events around WWII, the attacks we have suffered for the past 20 years and it seems very clear to me that YOU CAN"T REASON WITH SOMEONE THAT COMMITS ACTS OF TERRORISM.

We have to support Isreal. The terrorists will come to our doorstep whether we do or not. So we must have conviction, honor, and integrity in supporting our friends in need.
