Usually about 12 weeks along although with a doppler. Stethoscopes are not as sensitive....I had an ultrasound at 7 1/2 weeks and the ultrasound picked it up....Go get a book called " what to expect when you are expecting". It's the pregnancy bible and will help with all these questions. Your question as well as many others that you would not expect is in there. It's excellent in describing all of these little things that worry moms and help distinguish when something is "normal" or not.
Good Luck!

I know the heart in the baby is grown after 6 weeks, but I think it takes just a little longer to start beating (maybe 9 weeks).
I don't know if you can hear it with a stethescope. Go to the doctor. They will know all the answers and they will have the right equipment to hear the heart if it is time.

You won't hear a heartbeat with a stethescope until well into the pregnancy. My husband is a paramedic, and we have a hard time finding the heartbeat with a stethescope now at 38 weeks...
The first month you wouldn't hear anything.
The doctor's doppler doesn't even pick it up until 8-12 weeks.

Not with a stethoscope! A doppler. About 9 weeks.
